THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER 1-71 HOLDS MEETING By BOB PICKERING 3rd Vice-President, Local 1-71 A successful and informa- tive meeting was held in Port McNeill November 23 to dis- cuss falling and bucking problems in the various Ray- onier Canada (B.C.) Ltd. op- erations within Local 1-71. Ernie Freer, president of the Loggers’ Local, chaired the meeting with Ben Thompson, 1st vice-president, and myself also on hand representing the Local Union. Mahatta River was repre- sented by Chuck Evans and Paul Dawedow. Holberg was represented by Ben Gies- brecht, Ben LaRose, Eric Jas- kala, John Calhoun and Hank Polny. Jeune Landing was represented by G. Graham, Doug Milligan and Ernie Jen- sen. Port McNeill was repre- sented by Jim Babbington and Russ Pedersen. Moresby was represented by myself at the request of the fallers in that operation. Ernie Freer called the meet- ing to order at 10:00 am. stating that the purpose of the ON FALLERS' PROBLEMS gathering was to discuss the changes in the fallers’ work- ing conditions brought about by Rayonier’s close utilization policy and also the new pro- cedure of logging everything in one pass which had elimi- nated the salvage operations that had been carried out by the company until this year. Falling problems and falling agreements held with various other companies within the Local Union were also dis- cussed at some length. The meeting adjourned at noon with the delegates en- joying a fine lunch at the Dalewood Inn. The afternoon session was spent in dealing with the proposals to make the. necessary improvements in the fallers’ working condi- tions and to also provide the means of exchanging infor- mation between the. Rayonier camps. It was agreed that the Lo- cal would meet with the com- pany as soon as possible to discuss these items and that any proposals would be brought back to the fallers for their approval.
