In the 2.3-mile swim, he wound up third for his 40-to-44 age group, and left the water in ' 73rd position.-His swim time was ' $8 minutes, 26 seconds. The bike ride of 112 miles brought his time to six hours, 56 minutes, 44 seconds. Then his’ marathon run of just over 26 miles brought his total time to 11 hours, 25 minutes, 50 seconds. Ian was 24th in his age group at the end. - Most of the athletes were male — only 128 women entered. Com- petitors came from 24 countries, 44 American states and all 10 Canadian provinces. Organizers needed 4,000 volun- teers to operate the massive event. - Erin Baker of the U.S. knocked - ' 45 minutes off the 1988 course record for women. She finished in nine hours, five minutes. and 28 seconds — 15 minutes ahead of her closest rival. Lori Bowden was the top Cana- dian woman in seventh spot. Ray Browning of the U.S. won the men’s title for the third straight year. He beat his own 1988 record by 12 minutes with a time of eight hours, 32 minutes and 52 seconds.
