AB - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 6, 2002 “TERRACE STANDARD | oalition leaders want to boycott merchants t By JEFF NAGEL UNION LEADERS want to boycott local businesses that support the B.C, Liberal government cutbacks. Signs have already been made up for businesses to hang in their win- dows indicating they support pro- (esters and object to the sweeping civil service cuts. But Don Philpott, vice-president of the Kitimat-Terrace and’ District Labour Council, says he wants to go further and survey of local merchants to smoke out where they stand on the issue of government cuts. Workers could then shun shops that “don’t support us.” “We need to stop giving them our money now,” Philpott told a protest rally here Jan. 29. “To hell with them,” He says local businesses suppor- ted Liberal Roger Harris and pres- sure on them may persuade Skeena’s MLA to rethink his support of the government. One Philpott wants to convert is chamber of commerce president Beity Barton. He said he was disappointed to see Barton, a Shames Mountain manager, voice suppert for govern- ment cutbacks that hurt Terrace. “There’s no business in Terrace that has received more handouts from the public purse than Shames Mountain has,” Philpott said. “And I wonder where Shames Mountain would be without the pub- lic service wages that are spent up there on lift tickets.” Another more distant tool to re- move Harris is 2 recall campaign, LABOUR COUNCIL vice-president Don Philpott hotds a sign designed to identify shops that support civil service jobs and oppose cutbacks. Recent rallies have seen pro- testers chant “recall, recall, recall” and use slogans like “Hey, hey, ho ho. Roger Harris has got to go” and “T don’t know but [ve been told. Roger Harris has no soul.” Harris must get with the people’s program, Philpoit said or face the consequences. “You've had it buddy,” he said. “We're coming to get you.” If locals do plan to mount a recall campaign, theyll have to wait until 18 months after the election. That means the first day anyone can begin a recall campaign is Nov. 18, according to Elections B.C. Terrace was the site of B.C.'s first recall campaign in 1997, when local Crash Helmut forces tried to recall NDP MLA Helmut Giesbrecht. They failed to get the required 40 per cent of signatures of eligible vo- ters within 60 days.
