widely regarded as the first

how negotiators determine
certainty is being closely
scrutinized.

Negotiators are focussing
on three words when it com-

gating a 4,000 litre diesel
fuel spill in Meziadin Lake
Provincial Park.

The spill occurred over an
eight-day period in early
September from a BC Tel
repeater siation within the
park boundaries.

enily, a fitting on one of the’
connection hoses cracked,
allowing the fuel to spill
onto the ground.

“Tt impacted a fairly
localized area,’ says BC
environmental safety officer
Derrick Lowe. ‘‘The fuel
Sprayed out slowly, so the
soil absorbed most of it. It
wasi't a sudden release.”

Lowe says he has been
satisfied with BC Tel’s
tesponse to the spill. They
sent a backhoe to the site,
shortly after reporting the
spill, to dig an interceptor
trench to slop the fuel from
reaching waterways.

Lowe says the backhoe
then excavated about 200
cubic metres of  con-
taminated soil.

“T haven't seen the inves-
tigative report but the spill
appeared not to have im-
pacted the lakes or nearby
swampy areas,”’ Lowe says,

Ed Clark of BC Tel com-
munications says the com-
pany acted quickly to clean
up the spill.

‘We reported the spill im-
mediately and we have
crews cleaning it up right
now,’’ he says. “Obviously
there are procedures we
have to follow. These things
do happen.”’ :

But some Meziadin area
residents say that they
warned the environment
ministry and BC Tel about
the dangers of having large
quantities of diesel in the
park years ago. .,

but he admits there are con-
cerns about the situation.

says. “Ideally, il’s not very
good to have that quantity
of fuel there,””

Conservation Officer
Wayne Campbell says the
clean-up is currently un-
derway. He couldn’t com-
ment on whether charges
will be laid since the matter
is atilt under investigation.
