Not only is ~ jt Mother’s Day on Sunday, but it’s also the annual Trees for Canada plant. In recognition of this _ _ dual occasion, any mother who comes to the Skeena West site will be given a carnation. Each year, Scouts Canada members plant some two million trees to help beautify Canada and contribute to a renewable resource. An estimated 38 million trees have been planted since 1972. Locally, Scouting plants 3,000 trees each year with the help of Ministry of Forests and the forest industry.. Trees for Canada is more than a conservation initiative. It’s also a fund raiser, with Scouting youth obtaining pledges for the number of trees they will plant. Scouts are expected to plant 50 trees each, Cubs 40 trees and Beavers 30 trees each. Local Scouting retains 70 percent of all funds raised, with the remaining 30 percent split between the Provincial and National Councils. The Provincial Council uses Trees for Canada proceeds to provide leadership training and support, while the National portion goes to the World Brotherhood Fund to help Scouts and their communities in developing countries.
