Michelle Hendry and her co ach, Hugh MacKinnon posed with trophies the Caledonia Kermodes won at the B.C, High School championships recently, They Include Michelle's most valuable player award and the most sport- smanlike taam trophy. -Kermodes 4th, There’s an old saying about two out of three is not too shab- by, and that’s what the Cale- donia Kermode girls had to set- tle for at the B.C. senior high school girls double ‘AA’ basket- ball championships at Clear- brook on the March 12 week- end, They didn’t win the title they came in fourth. But Michelle Hendry won the - tournament’s Most Valuable Player award, and Kermodes brought back the Most Sports- manlike Team trophy which they had also won last year. It was the first time a team had ever been named Most Sportsmanlike in two straight years. . Coach Hugh Mackinnon felt he had the troops to do the job and improve over last year’s third-place position. Although they started off by winning their first two games — including a one-point upset of favored Salmon Arm — mistakes and poor shooting caught up with them in the third game semi- final, Their last game could have gone either way, but we dropped that one by two points, The opener against Seaquam ‘saw them play poorly from the start when they were down 14-9 at the quarter. Seaquam held a 28-36 bulge at the half, and Ker- "modes tied it up 38-all going into the final 10 minutes. Hendry was held to [8 points, but Lisa Dams and Jody Cox kicked in with 10 points apiece. That put them up against the Okanagan Giants — as tough a draw as they could expect. Coach Mackinnon described game two against Salmon Arm Jewels as a ‘barn-burner’. ‘The last quarter was simply unbeliev- able,’’ he said. Kermodes won this game 63-62. Se Michelle MVP Following game one, which the team played poorly despite a win, the coach and girls had a long “‘think”’ session which ap- parently perked them up and gave them incentive for the Jewels’ game. They roared out to a big lead and were up 20-10 at quarter time, Salmon Arm fought back and held a 35-34 margin at the half, Entering the final quarter, Kermodes were down two points — 52-50. Then it went 56-52 for Jewels. Kermodes came back — and made it 56-56. Jewels scored four more and were up 60-5é. Kermodes then tied it up at 60-all. As the clock ran down, Jewels went up 62-60, but Michelle Hendry sank a two-pointer and got a foul-shot as well. She made . the foul and it was 63-62. The last minute saw some sloppy ball with turnovers on both sides. Salmon Arm failed to convert their chances and it was victory for Kermodes. It was the second year in a row that Kermodes had defeated the top-ranked team, but they wanted a higher placing than the third spot they came home with in 87. . The semi-final playoffs were set. Kermodes were to put their fifth-place ranking against number-four Windsor, while number-two Centennial (the defending champs) were to take on number-three Vernon. Whereas game two was. stimulating, game three was just the opposite. It was Kermodes. downfall as. the girls took a 21-16 first- quarter deficit into the second quarter and met disaster against © North Van’s Windsor. The ball just wouldn’t drop in for our girls as they watched Windsor continued on page 9 TERRACE COMMERCIAL HOCKEY LEAGUE a : PLAYOFF FINAL ernur * MARCH 12 inn of the West 7-SKB Wreckers 3 MARCH TS.
