2 Terrace Review — Thursday, November 12, 1987 Sell-off program | affects thousands In Premier Bill Vander Zalm’ s recent announcement of phase. one of his privatization pro-. gram, he named two crown cor- porations and 11 government operations, involving 7,240 employees, that are to be sold or transferred to the private sector. by Tod Strachan He added that phase two of. the program has already begun and it includes another four government operations which will be sold or transferred. In a speech to the recent Social Credit annual conven- tion, Vander Zalm said the privatization initiative, which he called “Opportunities B.C.” will “‘open up new opportunities for the private sector.and British Columbians.” He said the pro- gram is a key part of the re- structuring of government and “is good news for business in -B. Cc. ih) “Tt will open the door and allow entrepreneurs, including government employees, to com- pete and to deliver services and programs more efficiently,’’: said Vander Zalm. ~ “It’s privatization with a pur- pose — to create new economic development and opportunities. . for all British Columbians and our private sector — and it will _ significantly reduce the size of government,” he stated... Vander Zalm stressed that all privatization arrangements will protect the public interest and that government would “ensure high standards in.the delivery of * privatized ‘services.”235* «.
