the city's road system for the

The subway, which will
cost 2,500 million rupees
($312.5 million) will carry six
millian passengers every
day, pi them up from 17
stations on the route,

Officials say the journey
from Dum .Dum_ to
Tollygunge will take about 34
minutes on trains running at
about 80km.p.h. The bus ride
now takes more than 9
minutes.

The design and equipment
for the subway have been
locally developed and the
project financed moatly by
the rallways ministry.

To cut costs, the subway is
being built in giant trenches
just below ground level,
instead of in tunnels.

But this “cut and cover”
method Is slow because
sewer and gas lines,
telephone and electric cables
have to be diverted,
