“Out & . on merger -KITIMAT is upbeat about the prospect of a massive merger between Alcan and two European firms. Locals see the union with Pechiney of France and Switzerland’s algroup as making Alcan a stronger company with even better job security, rather than raising any threat of layoffs, In fact CAW local 2301 president Rick Belmont and ’ Kitimat mayor Rick Woz- ney are both more optimistic ‘about the possibility of an expansion of Kitimat Works aS a result of the merger. The Fire Protection Agreement is the closest thing to amalgamation possible, said Terrace fire chief Randy Smith, “Tt’s very close to amalgamation, but the volunteer entities still maintain ownership of their halls,” Taking pride in the fire hall and being a distinct volunteer department, Smith said, is important to both Terrace and Thomhill. The new agreement would look al fire services not as Terrace and Thornhill sepa- rately, but ‘‘the area as a whole,”’ he said. By joining the two areas under one regional heading the Fire Underwriter Sur- vey - an audit done of the Terrace and Thornhill Fire’ Departments — could give the area a lower rating. That lower rating, Smith said, could mean lower conunercial insurance rates of up to ten per cent. “Our biggest opportunity is to impact commercial insurance,’’ he said, Insurance rates could go down by joining ‘Park Report by Marie-Josee Banville |: but you will find them by the millions. the aqualic plants, in open water, in braathes. oxyg boatman and back swimmers like ta spot them in open water. fish. observation release your catch, Plunge In!
