Banners like this, supplied by a Philadelohia firm on the order of Niagara Falls, Ont., city council to celebrate the city’s golden anniversary brought a torrent of protest from citizens when they appeared on city damp-posts. Lundy’s Lane recalled as U.S. insult scored NIAGARA FALLS A roar of protest louder than the noise in the famous nearby gorge rocked this border city last week when residents learned that a US. firm had hoisted 2,000 dec- orative banners based on the Am- erican flag across the city. One merchant charged the de- corations ordered by the city coun- cil from a Philadelphia firm for the city’s golden anniversary were “Un-Canadian.” The local Imper- ial Order of the Daughters of the Empire launched a protest petition. A member of the Chamber of Commerce resigned. City council member Ald. Frank Miller declared: “We called in a U.S. firm because it seemed no Canadian company could do the job.” Falls’ residents were especially bitter over the affair because of the historic background of the area. Reeve A. G. Bridge of nearby Stamford recalled the famous “Maple Leaf Forever” song of Al- erander Muir and its reference to the battle of Lundy’s Lane which took place in Niagara city limits. British and Canadian troops hurled back the U.S. invaders of 1812 here in a bloody battle. “Surely that put an end to US: domination,” exclaimed the 8g0- year-old reeve. | E. J. Leonard, a’ druggist, an- grily declared: “They are definite- ly U.S. decorations. I am really mad. I feel like tearing them all down and throwing them in the gutter.” Poland honors Infeld for scientific work Dr. Leopold Infeld, one-time mathematics professor at the Uni- * versity of Toronto who returned to his native Poland “to work for peace,” has the Banner of Labor, First Class. been honored for his scientific work with the Order of In 1946 Infeld correctly predicted that the Soviet Union would have the atomic bomb within three years.
