a 5 A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 141, 2005 Harris says payment ruckus _ fuels effort to defeat him -By ROD LINK LIBERAL CANDIDATE Roger Harris says the controversy over payments made to the B.C. Liberal party in order to _ attend a 2004 economic development seminar here has - fueled a Kitimat campaign to defeat him. “They’ ve been very clear,” said Harris of efforts by the District of Kitimat, labour unions and other groups there in opposing the idea of Alcan selling power. . “They want this issue to be a provincial election issue and they’re asking their community to vote accordingly to send a message,” he said. He acknowledged that the matter of Kitimat and other municipalities paying the Liberal party to attend the forum was first brought up by an on-line publication. » But Harris said Kitimat officials used the controversy to ramp up their campaign by claiming they were duped into - making the payments. ' “I think what this has done is it has given them the chance to put it a little over the top. And I think now it is being seen as being a little over the top,” Harris added. . “How can you. now say you’ve been duped when you paid the bill 10 months ago?” asked Harris. Liberal officials have now. said that. money should not: _ have gone to the Liberal party first to cover the expenses for” _ the forum. All of the estimated $2,400 that was collected has -been returned to those who attended. 2 — Group gets money _ THE NORTHWEST Science and Innovation Society got a. _ big financial boost May 5 from the B.C. The region runs from the Queen Charlotte Islands to Telkwa, and from Stewart to Kitamaat Village. It. has a regional volunteer board and is hiring one part-t -time . paid employee. It earlier lost a lawsuit against Alcan itself. Harris has counselled against any legal or other action to force Alcan to use its power locally instead of being allowed tosellit. Harris said the right approach i is to work with the govern- ment and Alcan’on how best to use its energy and resources ‘in the northwest and not to undertake court actions. “The right thing is to say we have a great community and_ we want to work with government and industry. That’s how you get to the end result and it’s a lot quicker,” he said. Kitimat municipal manager Trafford Hall says there’s no connection between his council and the NDP in terms of a campaign to oust Harris. . ° But he said NDP candidate Robin Austin’s criticism of power sales is getting him attention and votes in. Kitimat. “Our issue is power sales,” said Hall. “If Roger had said power sales is bad for the province, that’s it taking jobs away — if he had said that, he would have this’ riding sewn'up,” Hall added. Hall said he voted for Harris in 2001 and.contributed to . his campaign and that Kitimat mayor Rick Wozney, who ran’ ‘for the Liberals in Skeena in 1996, could hardly be tagged as an NDPer. . As for Kitimat’s payments to attend the 2004 economic development seminar, Hall said he knew the money was go- ing to the Liberal party back then. = But he didn’t believe it would be taken as a political con- tribution until contacted by a Lower Mainland reporter. “Actually we feel on the defensive. I had thought the Lib- eral party was acting to facilitate the seminar. But now it turns out it looked like a contribution to the B.C. Liberal party,” said Hall. ok ; “B.C. used to have the reputation as the place to teach. Now new teachers are leaving.
