Long-time Terrace resi- dent Ted Hamer provided the Standard with a photo- copied picture of another bridge — one he says is the original. His family used to re- side in the area and he re- gularly crossed the bridge to Ferry Island between 1928 and 1935, Hamer's photo shows a structure made of milled wooden beams, with a dozen or so men and a team of work horses posing on it. (The bridge picture reader Otto Lindstrom brought in shows a differ- ent type of bridge made from whole logs.) Then Thornhill politi- cian Les Watmough added his two cents. He says the 1910 pic- ture we printed last week shows a bridge that once spanned the Kalum river al Mud Lake, called Treston Legion News Lake on maps, and is south of Red Sand Lake. That bridge no longer exists, but it was used by a - number of hamesteaders - and -settlers.in the south end of the Kalum Lake | area at the turn of the cen- tury. “As far as I know, it burnt,” says Watmough, who adds crews went in to remove the remaining pil- ings in the 1950s. He bases his judgment on the fact that Treston Mountain can be seen in the background. “Every mountain has its own fingerprint," Wat- mough. said, adding some of the trees look familiar, too. Watmough is quite fa- miliar with the surrounding area. It’s located along his trapline. He also has a small cabin on the west side of Kalum Lake near Jackson Bay.
