Social services agencies told to cut the duplication THE PROVINCIAL gov- ernment is encouraging so- cial service providers to do away with duplication and overlap, says a’ cabinet minister who visited Ter- race last week. Lynn Stephens is the minister of state for women’s equality and met with representatives from child care and victims ser- vices agencies July 2. Both areas are under scrutiny by the provincial government as it cuts spending and changes the way it does business, “We're looking at how we can provide services to mect the needs,” said Ste- phens in adding that doing away with duplication and overlap is a key considera- tion. She said she was im- pressed with the range of services in Terrace for people who are the victims of sexual assault and for child care. Sharing office space and administration require- ments could be two ways to gain more efficiencies, the minister said. At the same time, Ste- phens acknowledged that various groups told her they need more money to provide services. The minister’s . visit came a week. after the Ksan House Society borough. “People are al- teady doing far more than what they are mandated for.” Scarborough said it is learned it would lose up to_ $60,000 for its sexual as- sault centre and low in- come parents began to cope with cuts to day care subsidies, Stephens said her job was to ensure a full range of child care, from people looking after a few child- ren who don’t need a li- cence to full-flown facili- ties, is available. Changes coming this fall to child care regula- tions could change the ratio of caregiver to child-. ren, she said. And despite daycare subsidy reductions or cuts. ...-- to low income families, . Stephens said parents are coping. “Parents generally still have choices,” she said in ° calling for a child care system that has a range of options. “Yes, we think that’s true,” Stephens responded when asked if the daycare subsidy reductions are being absorbed by those who are affected. Debbie Scarborough of the local transition house, which is run by the Ksan House Society and who was at one of the sessions, rejected any suggestion there is a duplication of overlap of sexual assault services in Terrace. _ “I don’t know where she. ; gets that from,” said Sear- °° Weather | was mixed JUNE’S WEATHER fea- . tured one great week but also more rain than nor- mal, reports Environment Canada.
