Aé- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 28, 2001 Bruce, you're wrong about my comments Dear Sir: Maybe I This is a CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD should hire teply to Mr. a you as a Bruce Hill’s Th IVI ! B consultant. March 21 let- w al ag “Temerity to ter regarding biame the the “Guides Nisga’a”? Cry Foul” article of March 7, 2001. I have to set the record straight. Mr. Hill, yes, I did choose guiding as my career and unlike your own clouded thinking I have worked very hard building my business and have spent a lot of time and money buying classified rod days, Are you insinuating that: because my par-' ents moved me from Ontario, Canada, to this beautiful province when I was three years old, that I should have less rights than any other citizen of this province? 1 take great offense to your comment that the right to exploit a public resource Should be conferred to anyone with a rod and an inclination to sell fishing opportu- nities wherever and whenever he chooses, and irrespective of anyone else's inter- ests. I have never inferred that nor do [ endorse it now. I have followed all of the regulations that have been put in place for guides and will continue to do so. i worked in the for- est industry and am still working very hard to buiid a successful business, | have never asked for something for nothing. As to my whining in the media, jump- ing ahead of the queue and blaming the Nisga’a, I am most astonished that you were able to read that into my comments. We have guided on the lower Nass for the past two years without problems. This year the environment ministry took the rod days back. Again, at no time did 1] blame the Nisga’a for this transgres- sion. In fact I am most dispieased with the ministry. If told that this would happen when my guide licence was applied for last year, I would have had the opportunity to deve- lop a dialogue with the Nisga’a long be- fore this season. Mr. Hill, you spew this trash forth, when even you had the opportunity to let me know that this was coming. I now understand that the AIP was in effect long before I started my own busi- ness, yet the ministry never let me know it was going to take our rod days away. You, being a guide, should know the importance of knowing when and where you may guide. Stability is key when planning. lawyer preser and the. conditions: “St i iny guide ice Give it a rest, Bruce. If I knew that the tod days were going to be terminated } would have consulted with the Nisga’a’a a long time ago. By the way, | have phoned the Nisga’a numerous times. I have no beef with their situggles as you have insinuated and ac- tually hope that their rights are finally being recognized. What about mine? By the way Mr. Hill, I do have rights to guide on certain rivers such as you. When someone takes that right away by blind siding you instead of educating you that change is coming, wauld you not be outraged? Again, I have not and did not blame the Nisga’a. The worst translation that you have made form my remarks was the illegal guiding quote. I was misquoted in the ar-_ ticle or did not make myself clear, I did say that I would fish when and where | want, but let me assure you that I would do so abiding by the Jaw, A slight contra- diction, but I was, as you were, mad when I spoke those words. I never said that I would guide illegally. I never have and never will. “If standing up for something that | believe In Is considered to be arrogant, then | suppose | am.” If standing up for something that I be- lieve in is considered to be arrogant, then 1 suppose I am. Maybe I am ignorant if trying to protect a way of life for my fa- mily and myself is considered a stench of staggering self-interest. Educale me. Next time you would like to chastise me, get your facts straight. As to the alti- tude adjustment, ‘maybe you should look in the mirror. Your malicious comments were not needed and in poor taste. Next time call me and educate me if you be- lieve [ am wrong. My door is always open. I would like to apologize ta the Nisga’a and anyone else that was offen- ded by my comments in the article. They were not intended fo do so. 1 was simply amplifying my frustra- tions with a system that is unfair and ob- viously not working for a lot of dishear- Fira Centre) area.
