\ A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 13, 1998 MLA ponders fish guide law Dear Sir: You published a letter from Steve Nicholls. “Guides are treated like dirt’’, dard, May 6. Let me pro- vide some background miss- ing from the letter. The impression is left that something bas changed to negatively effect local guiders and that it is due to governnient actions. That is simply not the case. There have been no changes for a year. Any scheduled fee in- creases were withdrawn some months ago. I requested a review of the issues and a consultation The Terrace Stan-: with local guides after I met with a group of local fish guides. The ARA Consul- lant’s Report mentioned fol- lowed several discussions with ministry staff. Local guides were concemed about possible fee increases, the current fee levels and the situalion on the lower Skeena with respect to il- legal guiding. The report was to provide some guidance for the min- istry in the future. The report is not being ignored by either the ministry or myself. Local guides specifically requested thal last year’s rod stop abortions An open letter to: Helmut Giesbrecht, Skeena MLA Dear Helmut: Why are we killing unborn children in our hospital? In 1997 there were 78 abortions at Mills Memorial Hospital. You have recently been through a recall for not represent- ing your local communily, and I think this would be a good opportunity to make amends, If we look at a cross section of the population of the people in Terrace the majority have a religious belief so it is safe to assume that none of those people agree with abortion. Most people are taxpayers and I don’t think people want their tax dollars going to fund abortions. Also, most people will ngcd medical care at one time or another and would rather see a hospital bed available for saving life rather than taking it, Mills is currently running a deficit. What is the cost of 78 abortions? I recently talked with a couple who have been waiting to adopt for the last cight years, so I know people who are waiting to adopt do not agree with abortion. So, if the mother and father do not want to keep the child, there are homes waiting. It is also known that women who have had abortions often suffer physical and psychological distress. It is also known that a very low percentage (less that 1/4 of 1 per cent) of abortions are the result of rape or where there is a serious life threatening problem with the baby. So Helmut, in my simplistic way of thinking there are very few people in our community who would want abar- tion in our hospital. I feel that you should do the right thing and represent your community and stand up against abor- tion. I will close with one short analogy. . I€ 1 was a bald cagle I would be free to roam 2nywhere without any fear of being killed by humans, due to our laws. If I was an unborn baby in my Mother’s tummy and my mother was at Mills hospital there would be about a one in four chance she was there to end my life. Helmut now is the time to get our priorities right and protect the most important life on this planet: human life. Michael Moleski, Terrace B.C. a CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag day fee increase be rolled back to one dollar per day. On the day we met the min- ister announced that any fur- ther increases would be withdrawn — mere coin- cidence — but the request for a roll back of fees remained unsatisfied as it does today, The report discusses a range of issues. It even makes comment on what happened last year and it is critical of the timing and the process around last year’s increases. It does not make any suggestion that the cur- rent fees should be rolled back to last year’s Ievels, Fish stocks and illegal guiding remain the greater problem. Unless vacationing fishers are guaranteed a fish or two during their holiday ihe rod day fee could be zero and it would not make a difference. The quality of the fishing experience is a much greater factor, ' In the lower Skeena, and the report identifies this fact, all the fishing spots are well known. Tourists may hire a guide the first time they come to this area; after that they can stay in one of the local motels or the bed and breakfasts and get in- structions on how to get to the local fishing spots. Some in the accommoda- tion industry even offer rides to a spot on the rivers. Tourists save the cost of a guide, This is unfair compe- tition. I am told by ministry staff that enforcement is very dif- ficult. Proving that someone is guiding without a ficence is not easy. Perhaps we necd a law that makes it clear that non-resident sports fishers must be accompanied by a licensed B.C, guide. I’m told that the tourist in- dusiry does not favour that option yet most of the locals I have talked to think it is a good idea. Any opinions would be appreciated. Hours Monday - Thursday 9am - 10 pm Friday & Saturday 9 am - Midnight Sundays & Holidays 10 am - 10 pm Barrett raises eyebrows Joe Barrett JOE BARRETT, a former federal candidate for Skeena riding, has surfaced in the centre of the leaky condo is- sue, Now living in Vancouver, Barrett has been doing re- search on behalf of B.C.’s building-trades unions into why hundreds of Lower Mainland condominiums were so shoddily con- structed, Barrett is the son of for- mer NDP premier Dave Barrett, who was appointed earlier this year as the leaky-condo inquiry com- missioner, The commission has been charged with determining who is responsible for the problem, Now the non-union con- struction industry is crying foul, saying Barrett’s hiring, after his father was ap- pointed, raises questions about how much the com- mission is being influenced by unions. ‘That is the most in- credible thing, to learn that his son is a consultant... with the building trades,” said = Phillip Hochstein, spokesman for the Indepen- dent Businesses and Con- Workers to be helped THE UNION representing workers who’il lose their jobs when Terrace Co-op closes its main department store will try to negotiate enhanced severance and pension packages. ‘And the Onited Food and Commercial Workers Union will connect its members up with whatever government job adjustment and taining programs that are available, says spokesman Tom Fawkes, ““Fhe needs of each per- son. arc. different,”’ said Fawkes: of the 40 Co-op union employecs who'll be out of work the end of June. “We have to get as broad “a program in place as pos- sible.” ~ Fawkes said the enhanced severance and pension pack-, -ages are on top of provi- sions contained in the con- tract the union has with the Co-op. The tember-owned orga- nization announced 10 days ago that declining revenues and debt are forcing it to close its food, hardware, clothing, cafeteria and gas bar operations. All told, 80 people will be affected by the closure. Assistance for retraining can come through the feder- al governmeni’s industrial adjustment Strategy pro- ~~ - gram, an established system used by workers and com- panies facing planned or un- foreseen closures. “A lot of this will carry on after the store closes,”’ said Fawkes. He said the closing of a co-op affects unions more than other job loss situa- tions.. **Co-ops have been close to the union movement and that makes it particularly hard,” Fawkes continued. “Co-ops have been tradi- tionally fair with their em- ployees.’”’ The union official added that the Terrace Co-op main slore closure is a symptom of changing constimer habits in the 90s. ‘‘Now it’s price, glitz, whatever’s new happen- ing,’’ said Fawkes. tractors Association of B.C. “It really again taints the commission and makes con- do owners a political foot- ball.” The association is worried Barrett’s inquiry will blame -Non-union construction out- ‘fits for the leaky condo problem without taking into consideration the role: of engineers, architects, build- ing codes and municipal building inspectors. For its part; the B.C, and Yukon - Territory Building and Construction Trades Council has no problem with Barrett’s research being used for the council’s submission to his father’s inquiry. “TF he had any role, il was quite minimal,’’ said Tom Sigurdson, executive direc- tor of the council, which represents building-trades unions. Barrett says he’s worked as a researcher for the coun- cil since last November. The former Prince Rupert resident ran unsuccessfully in the 1993 federal election in Skeena.
