baked breads and treats is a popular one at the Farmers Market
on Saturday momings. It's best to go early before they run out.

Mother Olivia Hanriques are
familiar faces at the farmers
market. But they haven’t al-
ways lived in Terrace, They
originally come from a town
about 70 km outside of Lis-
bon, Portugal.

Olivia’s husband, Mario

-Hanriques, came to Canada to

work in Kitimat in 1955, He
bought vegetables from Mr. &
Mrs. Lipps who had a farm
that covered the area from
Haugland down to Graham
and from to the west side of
Kalum Street.

In 1963 Olivia joined Mario
in Canada, bringing with her
their only child Maria. It was
then that they bought the
Lipps’ old farmhouse, and part
of the farm on Pear St,

‘When Maria was grown, she
and her husband built a house
next door to her parents’s
house. They have raised two
children here in Terrace,

Over the years Maria and her
mother continued to Keep the
farm up, and sold vegetables
to people at a road side stand.
Then four years ago they de-
cided to try selling vegetables
at the Skeena Valley Farmers
Market,

Mother and daughter then
added home-baked goods to
their stand, a popular addition.

Some customers come all the
way from Prince Rupert, look-
ing for their very popular Ap-
ple Cake. The FILHOSES or
Portuguese doughnuts, are 2

Distillation

*# distiller boils water, then cools the steam until it
’ condenses. Salts, sediment, metals and anything that won't
boil or evaporate remains behind in the distiller. While
distillation removes most contaminants it doesn't remove
certain classes of substances very well. These include
organic contaminants such as pesticides, trihalomethanes,
chloroform and benzene. To remove these substances an
activated carbon filter must be used in conjunction with the
distiller. Regular cleaning of the distiller is essential to
remove scale. When it comes to drinking, distilled water is
an acquired taste. It is the lack of dissolved oxygen that
denias distilled water its flavour. As a result, distilled water
may taste insipid or flat to you.
