The illegal group conducted its hostile activity by unlaw- ful means and also exploited lawful possibilities. At the same time, by hid- ing their real objectives and by voicing demagogic and false “socialist”? slogans they temporarily misled and used unsuspecting people for their objectives aimed against the state. The group of conspirators, and in the first place Nagy, worked out in detail the poli- tical platform of the move- ment against the people’s democracy — intermediate tasks, methods and future ob- jectives. The aim was to undermine the regime, discredit the state’s prestige and mobilize the hostile elements opposed to the people’s democracy so as to use them as a basis to obtain power by force. The demonstration of Oct- ober 23 (outbreak of the rising) was initiated by the group, using its connections in the Petoefi Circle and in the universities. Jozsef Szilagyi, commission- ed by Imre Nagy, at a meet- ing held in the technological university on the night of October 22, personally incited to. demonstrations. The group directed the October 23 demonstration and at that period held secret con- ferences almost every day and sometimes several times a. day. On Nagy’s initiative a meet- ing of. members- of the cons spiracy was held on Octobef 19, 20 and 22 to work out the program of the goverrn- ment that was to be set up. One centre of the conspir- acy was~ organized in: -the- main Budapest police sta- tion. 2 Sandor Kopacsi, .. abusing his position as police chief and misleading his. subordi- nates, executed the tasks drawn up by the illegal cen- tre. He gave orders to district police stations ~ not -to--offer any resistance to the insur- gents but to hand over their arms and police buildings to them. j Kopacsi caused “more than 20,000 firearms to be distri- buted among the insurgents from police stock. | The trial showed that Nagy White-jacketed Soviet policemen restrain Moscow citizens demonstrating outside the West German embassy after a West German crowd, including Hungarian fascist emigres, attacked the Soviet embassy at Bonn. and. his accomplices ‘estab- lished secret contacts and as- sociations with the represen- tatives of capitalist restora- tion well before. the October uprising and concluded an al- liance with them so as to seize power by force.” Agreement was reached with Anna Kethly as early as: July 1956 regarding her participation in a future gov- ernment to be headed by Nagy. At the end of 1955, Nagy decided to re-establish the old so - ealled. “Coalition” parties and to form a gov- ernment with them. When, however, he obtained the post-of prime «minister by force and deception and by relying on the counter revo- lutionary forces, he went far beyond that point. .He . permitted unrestricted organization of 70 different parties and organizations in the few days of the counter- revolution. : These included fascist par- ties prohibited under the peace treaty. The group also “rehabilitated” the justly sentenced Jozsef Mindszenty, former Catholic primate. After an agreement had been reached with him through Zoltar Tildy, Mind. szenty preclaimed the pro- gram of capitalist restoration on November 3. Tildy agreed by phone with Ference Nagy, who had ar- rived in Vienna to back the June 27, 1958 — counter-revolution, that the emigres would support Imre Nagy’s government. On November 2, Imre Nagy made room in the cabinet for extremist representatives of capitalist restoration and for leaders of the counter- revolutionary rising. The cease-fire order which the Nagy group had passed paralyzed the armed forces that defended the people’s re- public, while the counter-rev- olutionary forces simultane- ously organized and armed were. legalized. A total of 234 people were assassinated during this period and another 3,000 loyal to the the people’s democratic sys: tem were jailed and marked for execution. In addition, up to Novem- ber 4, death lists were com- piled of more than 10,000 peo- ple who were to be elimi- nated. Through Pal Maleter the group was in contact with Cowley, British military at- tache, who took a direct part in the military direction of the rising. The communique said Nagy’s treason was crowned by his radio appeal on November 4, in which he appealed for the open and armed intervention of the West against the rev- olutionary worker - peasant government and the Soviet troops whose assistance it had requested.
