Final tally over $67,000
in biggest Tribune drive

As the final tally for the 1980
financial drive was unfurled before
the over 450 Tribune supporters at-
tending the victory banquet at the
Italian Cultural Centre last Satur-
day, the hushed anticipation turn-
ed into delighted applause when the
figure of $66,386 came into full
view, well over the drive target of

ge ea tabulations of drive
money. that came in after. the ban-
quet, raised the actual sum to
$67,259. :

<The achievement of this target,
the largest in the history of the
paper,” T ribune editor Sean Grif-
fin told the crowd, ‘‘was the
culmulative efforts of hundreds, in
fact, thousands of people who
donated both large and small sums
during the course of the two month
drive.” :

“Our ‘going over the top’ signals
anew importance for therole of the
Tribune,”’ he said, citing the strug-
gle counter the cold war and the
fight against the coal sellout as ex-
amples of the need for the paper.

The building stones of every
drive are the press builders who

raise between $50 and $150; the-

honor press builders who raise $150
or over, and the members of the
500 Club, who bring in the
remarkable sums of $500 and
more.

This year there were 141 press
builders, who will be receiving a 16
month pocket diary for their fund
raising efforts. For the 150 honor
press builders, whose names were
displayed on an honor scroll at the
banquet, they will receive the
pocket diary along with the peren-
nial favorite Tribune key ring.

Paul Snihur, Marty Smith and Bill
Chobotuck were each presented
with a lapel pin by Tribune business
manager Pat O’Connor. °

Three members from : among
their ranks stood out by the sheer
size of the sums they raised, quali-
fying as this year’s top money
raisers.

Ed Dotzler, who Griffin
remembered seeing as a child on the
Tribune’s mailing day, ‘‘and who,

thirty years later, is stillon the mail- —
ing crew putting the paper out,”

raised $900; Stan Lowe, who
“started raising money the day the
drive began from the workers in his
union, the Canadian Brotherhood
of. Railway and Transport
Workers, brought in $896; and
former business manager and
longtime supporter, Rita Tanche,
who for another year, diligently
raised over $1,000, in fact, $1,224,
by soliciting donations from her
many friends. All three received a

lapel pin and book, “‘People of the ~

Totem.”

The -fierce competition for the
club shields, evidenced by the
number of runner-ups, was ‘‘a dif-
ficult choice,’’ Griffin said. The
Nanaimo and Surrey clubs were
close behind Victoria, which took
the provincial shield by raising
$2,930 on a quota of $1,500.

In Greater Vancouver, the Van-

couver East club outstripped its ~

closest competition, the Niilo
Makela and Bill Bennett clubs, by
raising the amazing sum of $9,219
on a quota of $6,000, winning the
shield for the fourth time in a row.

. Tribute was paid to a past
member of both the 400 and 500
Clubs, Mike Freylinger, who died
earlier this year of cancer. His
outstanding -work as a supporter
and fund raiser for the Tribune was
quietly reflected upon by the entire
gathering.

On a happier note, 15 Soviet
tourists, who arrived in the city
Saturday, were recognized from
the stage, at which point the entire
banquet crowd rose spontaneously
to their feet to applaud them.

The three winners of the Tribune
contest were; first prize: Julius
Stelp, Vancouver; second prize: O.
Johansen, Victoria; and third
prize: W. F. Monahan, Chilliwack.

Time to rap Socreds

writes: I need not enumerate the
many examples of the Social Credit
government’s callousness towards
our less fortunate citizens. Anyone
who has seen the TV or the
newspaper will agree that since
their re-election, the Bennett
ministers have accelerated the
legislation that denies the under-
privileged the services they so
urgently need.

Good business people endeavor

B 3 to liquidate their liabilities. And

= few can deny. that the Bennett
9 ministers are good businessmen:
& there is Evan Wolfe and his car
o company; Vander Zalm and his
2 garden shops (shovels anyone?);
w McCarthy and her florist com-
2 pany; Bill Ritchie and his land
= speculations.
So we should not be surprised if
they look upon the poor as
liabilities. The only music to their
ears is the ring of the cash register
and anything that does not yield a
‘fair return is something to be
avoided. ;
The people of pre-war Germany
did not wake up one mofning to
find their freedoms gone over-

night. They lost their freedoms, bit
by bit, and it was only when all were
gone that the people found
themselves impotent.

Unless we wake up and more
strenuously protest this govern-
ment’s unfair and harsh legislation,
weare likely to find ourselves up in
the air without a leg on which to
stand.

drive for the Tribune, members of

‘ the seamen’s section of the Cana-

dian Brotherhood of Railway,
Transport and General Workers
and former members of the Cana-
dian Seamen’s Union contributed
$896 on a target of $400. The total
included $150 from one retired log-
