AB - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 5, 2003 Coliege gets bit of a break from new provincial budget NORTHWEST COM- MUNITY College will get the same amount of money from the provincial gov- emment — $14.4 million .— for its new budget year be- ginning April 1 as it did in the fiscal year just ending. That was enough to bal- ance the budget this year but isn’t enough to account for wage and inflationary pressures next year, presi- dent Stephanie ‘Forsyth said last week. Forsyth had feared los- ing as much as $800,000 from the $14.4 million be- cause of a provincial deci- sion to end support for part time continuing education programs. “That money is staying. They're calling it some- thing different, but it is still there,” she said after receiving a telephone briefing from provincial of- ficials after the Feb. 18 provincial budget was: re- leased for the 2003-04 fis- cal year, “It’s great news.” Losing that money would have had the great- est impact on the college’s smaller campuses as con- tinuing education is the backbone of their offerings. The college still has to come up with between $600,000 and $700,000 ‘in - cost cutling or new reve- nue to account for .wage increases, inflation and in- creasing the number of students attending the col- lage, said Forsyth. It has the option of rais- ing tuition fees but Forsyth said the college board is reluctant to do so to avoid- increasing student costs to. Gosnell at. Harvard NISGA’A Lisims Govern- ment president Joe Gosnell took aim at the softwood lumber dispute ‘with the U.S. in a speech to an elite ~ audience at Harvard Uni- versity in Boston Monday. “As the rest of British. Columbia suffers from the punitive U.S, saftwood lumber duties, so does the Nisga’a Nation,” Gosnell,: who holds honourary dac- torates, told the Harvard faculty club. “But B.C.’s forest indu- stry will weather this storm. When free and fair trade is a reality in the, lumber industry, we will be ready.” Gosnell’s speech cov- ered the history and trans- formation of the Nisga’a - under their treaty, which took effect nearly two. years ago. The new Nisga’a com- a mercial] fishery is gener- ating jobs ‘and income, Gosnell added, in partner- ship with Jim Pattison’s Canfisco Corporation.. “Through this alliance, a percentage of our annual catches are utilized for va- lue-added products, in-~ cluding premium quality, - specially labeled Nisga’a wild salmon.” Northwest Smile Design Center DPA. There is a bit of good news in that the province has lowered the target of full time equivalent stu- dents it says should be re- pistered io justify. the amount of money the col- lege it does get. The target for the com- ing year is 1,629 students, which is less than the 1,711 students the pro- vince had wanted this year. So far this year, the college has registered the equivalent of 1,570 full time students. It means the 1,629 fig- ure is achievable, said Forsyth. The target rises to 1,653 full time equivalent stu- dents for the 2004-05 bud- get year and 1,653 the year after. Last year, provincial of- ficials told the college they wanted more than 1,800 full time equivalent students on the books by 2004-05. While the student ¢n- rolment expectations have dropped, ‘thé province is holding firm on its goal of . cutting the college’s bud- get. The $14.4 million for the coming year is to shrink to $13.93 million in 2004-05. Forsyth said the college is developing a number of new programs, some in partnership with other in- stitutions, to raise the full time equivalent figure. One program, which would see the college offer the first two years of a Ba- Stephanie Forsyth chelor of Science in Nur- sing program with students transferring to the Univers- ity of Northern British Co- lumbia here for the final two years, would add 16 full time students to the college enrolment list. “We're working very hard to get thal,” said For- syth, HELP, we need somebody HELP, not just anybody - HELP, you know we need someone who can appreciate price values like Solid Pine Furniture. these on Help us get a load off our minds and in our warehouse while we are temporarily a little overstocked on the following items for a very limited time.
