‘AS - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 21, 2001 A if he Don’t forget paramedics Dear Sir: I am writing in support of my husband and the 3000-plus paramedics of the B.C. Ambulance Ser- vice. A recent report outlined the efforts of rescue crews who freed a driver trapped in her vehicle and helped others after an accident west of town. While this was accur- ate, there were also six ambulance paramedics on scene, Iwo ambulance units and the medevac he- licopter. They also helped in the extrication of the patients. They treated the pa- tients’ spinal injuries, splinted fractures, dressed wounds, performed vital sign checks, patient as- sessments, and started IV fluid therapy. On the trip to Mills Memorial Hospital the pa- CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag tients were comfarted and cared for in the back of the ambulances and in the medevac helicopter. A child who was transported was given a stuffed bear to sling to for comfort. Once at the hospital emergency department, paramedics assisted medi- cal staff. The nurses and doctors at Mills Memorial Hospital skillfully further treated the patients, stabi- lized the patients, and made arrangements for their transportation to an acule care facility in Seat- ile. Each day paramedics go out and do their jobs. Some 400,000 calls are done each year by B.C, Ambulance Service. Of that amount, 1800-plus calis are done each year here in Terrace. They do not expect thanks, no recognition. They do their job in ser- vice to the people of Brit- ish Columbia, They must be silent when comments are made or neglected to be made via the media. You can be sure, when- ever you read about motor vehicle accidents, and ac- cidents with injuries, your B.C. Ambulance Service Paramedics were there working alongside emer- gency service personnel. Holly Wassink, More on health expenditures Dear Sir: This is in response to Terrace Area Health Council CEO Dieter Kuntz’s Nov. 7 letter, “Wrong number on PR.” In my written report to the Select Standing Committee on’ Health Thad submited the following: ‘ A “Instead of trying to infuse new health care monies into this present health care system, the government needs to see how health authorities and hospital admin- istralors are currently spending scarce health care funds. The local health coun- cil has recently spent $4,200 on circwla- ting the 2000-01 annual report to local re- sidents. The health council also spent $5,000 on two new signs for the hospital and Terraceview Lodge. Last year $10,000 was allocated for public rela- tions. Another $10,000 was spent on ee, chairs for the education room at the hos- pital.” Further into my report I pointed out that there have been vast health care monies spent on fruitless studies. Three of them cost taxpayers $481 000! In..my opinion, alli northwest could receive better health care services, if these monies were directed into home support services, patient care, replacing antiquated hospital equipment and recruiting essential medical staff. - If during my lengthy verbal report I stated that $10,000 was spent on PR ra- ther than $10,000 was allocated, I apolo- gize. My written report is accurate and it was not my intention to leave false per- ceptions.
