Debbie Carruthers, store supervisor at Carters Jewel- less, said lovestruck locals are buying more diamond engagement rings this year than last year. “We are selling more diamonds,”’ Carruthers said, emphasizing the year 2000 has a lot to do with it, Lorie Parr, owner of Er- win’s Jewellers, said many locals are interest in buying Canadian diamonds by Sirius Diamonds Ltd, the first company ever to mine and manufacture rough diamonds in Canada. These gems, which come from the Ekati mine located in the Lac de Gras area in the Northwest Territories, are the first 100 per cent Ca- nadian diamonds to be mined, cut and polished in the north, Craig de Grachy, vice. president of Sirius Diamonds, said less than a ‘thousand gems have been produced since the company Started manufacturing rough diamonds Feb. 1, 1999, But, ever since the gems were made available, de Gruchy said buyers have been interested, **As the factory was open- ing and getting going, our. demand was quickly out- shipping ithe supply,”’ he said. De Gruchy is still busy filling back orders of presold gems, however, he expects to be caught up in . the next: months. «. When - fully operational? the factory is expected to manufacture 1000 diamonds each month. Alter waiting six months, Erwin’s Jewellers _ finally received its first shipment of the Canadian gems last week. Parr said all Sirius diamonds are above average because they are cut and graded to very high stan- dards. To certify they are authenlic Canadian gems, ail Sirius gems are laser engraved with a tiny polar bear and given a registration nuraber.
