AB - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 22, 1998 " FERRACE STANDARD Business Review Out & About Visa use attacked + | A GROUP representing home-based businesses says ‘, | it?s wrong for the provincial government to change “| | from purchase orders to Visa cards when buying goods and services from merchants. *'The government of B.C.’s move to pay its small in- voices via Visa will contribute to the exacerbation of poverty and fuel inflation,’’ says Lorne Peasland, president of the B.C, Home Business Federation. He said not many home-based businesses can afford the size of bond Visa requires or the 3 per cent to 7 per cent transaction fee. “In today’s belt-tightening economy, who can afford to have their profits skimmed like that, so they make less money?” said Peasiand, adding the federation is asking its members to stop using Visa. New WCB regs in place A MAJOR overhaul of the Workers Compensation Board’s occupational health and safety standards took effect last week. The new regs are divided into three casy-to-use books covering core requirements, general hazard re- quirements, and industry specific/activity requirements. A plain-language guide is being produced to help ex- plain key requirements to small business owners. WCB vice-president Ralph McGinn says ‘the pro- vince’s injury rate has dropped by almost 25 per cent since 1990 to five lost-tine injuries per 100 person- years of employment in 1997. That means that about one in 20 workers in B.C, bad a workplace injury last year that resulted in time away from work. “While the downward trend is encouraging, tha in- jury rate remains the second highest in Canada and we consider that unacceptable,’’ McGinn said. ‘ Copies of the new regs are available free of charge in print, CD-ROM, computer disk and on the WCB web site at www.web.be.ca. To order a free copy phone toll free 1-800-661-2112 or fax to 604-279-7406. Net listings lost in space ANYONE TRYING to connect to northwest real estate listings on the Internet have been out of luck, The local listings were to be available in detail on Multiple Listings Service’s web site — www.mls.ca — after the Northwest Real Estate Board joined the Cariboo Real Estate Association last month. But technical glitches have hampered that effort. Remax’s Gordie Olson says he’s been told northwest listings should be available on the site in early May. Olson said the company that maintains MLS’s web site, JCI Technologies, is still completing changes to -the site needed to accommodate the northwest. | - "Its taken longer than we’ve expected,” added Steve Cook, of Coldwell Banker.
