Choosing a healthy lifestyle NEXT WEEK, Nov. 17-23 is drug awareness week, and a number of events have been planned around town to raise awareness of the negative effects of drugs and al- cohol. Businesses around town are chal- lenging their employees to go without nicotine or caffeine for one day during next week. Some people are carrying the challenge even further, and are . going without the whole week. The event is being sponsored by the Northwest Alcohol & Drug Services, “Tf your company would like to fake part, call them at 638-8117 ‘ind tell them what your office is doing, They’ll add you to the growing list, and arrange a chal- lenger to go up against you. Staff from Northwest Alcohol and Drug will also be in the Skeena Mall on Friday and Satur- day, Nov. 22-23, They’ll be hand- ing out balloons, doing face paint- ing and showing a number of videos, such as films ahout drink- ing during pregnancy, and the ef- fecis of alcohol on the family. They'll also show a film for teens about smoking, People are also invited tao come by and check out the resource li- brary in the Northwest Drug and Alcohol office. It’s located on the second floor of the TRIGO Build- ing next to the Happy Gang Cen- ter. Staff at the office have devel- oped a unique method of treating clients, Their philosophy is that chemical When helping someone with an addiction, staff al the centre ad- dress the whole person: his or her physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual aspects. The whale person is affected by misuse and the whole person must be ad- dressed in recovery. The agency offers free confiden- lial individual counseling, family and group counseling for those af- fected by substance misuse and addiction. They also offer outreach services lo the hospital, local schools, ser- vice agencies and any group that wishes education around ‘drug and dependency is a family disease - it" alcohol misuse, 2° ~ affects not only thé chémically de- pendent individual, but also fam- ily, friends an colleagues. Because of this fact a person in one of their recovery programs will hopefully involve all members of the family. This family involvement is para- mount to a healthy recovery. Stop by and check out their large library of resource pamphlets that are free for the taking. Videos can be seen on premises, and books may be loaned out as well. In addition they liaise with other agencies, and do referrals to residential treatment programs.
