Timbermen fal! flat BY DAVE JIAMILTON The Terrace Timbermen ended their preseasun and began the regular season PNWHL play on the same, note this weekend as they lost both games. Saturday evening they hosted the Kitimat Winter Hawks and dropped 4 5-3 decision before about 450 hometown fans. On Sunday they began regular season play and were Oulclassed as the Atom Motor Kings ran up a 13-3 tally. Saturday the fans were treated !o a fast-paced, exciting game with both teams skating hard throughout the ~~ three Periods. ‘The fast pace resulted in many scoring opportunities with the Winter Hawks being able to capitalize more often. The Timbermen opened the scoring al the $:00 mark of the first period as Bob Grant fired a low shot past Hawk goalie Sherstubetoff after Rob Dempster had dug the puck out of the corner, Troy Farkvam also assisied. Mott and Marleau broke aut on a 2 on 1 break with Marleau finishing off the play by firing a shot into the upper corner of the Terrace iet over Goalie Rob Dozzi’s shoulder. Just seconds laler the Timibermen regained the lead as Farkvam, Dempster and Grant combined again with Farkvam banging in the rebound after a hard shot from Dempster. Kitimat rounded out the first period scoring six minutes laler as the Tim- hermen were guilty of some sloppy play in their own end. Winter Hawk Schooly picked up a loose puck at the rim of the circle and blasted a shot that found its way between Dozzi's legs. The first period also featured the games only fisticuffs as Timbermen Dave Bell and Hawk Jeffery tangled with Bell being the clear winner. In the second period Kitimat took the lead for the first time as, at the 10:22 mark, Mott found himself all alone in front of the Tim- bermen net and beat Harold Mucha after Mucha had mad the save on a point blank shot from Mazure. The Timbermen came back and some impressive forechecking tei to Dave Bell's icing goal four and a half minutes later. Once again Dempster and Fark- (yam drew assists. With just two and a half minutes remaining in the second period Kitimat tock the lead for good as Jefferey picked up his own rebound and fired a high shot past a screened Mucha into the Terrace nel. The last period featured only one goal .as Hawk Jefferey picked up his second of the night as he slid the puck under a sprawling Mucha after Egan had made an excellent play al the Terrace blueline toset up the val, Coach Dale Kushner was pleased with the game and the play of his club. “We had more scoring chances than Kitimat but we just didn't capitalize on them.” On Sunday, the Tim- bermen ran into a well honed Prince Rupert team and were never really in the contest as the Kings fired 74 shots at gvalie Harold Mucha. Terrace had trouble in their own end from the outset of the game and it took Prince Rupert only 37 seconds to get on the scoreboard, The Kings had leads of 3-0 and 8-2 after the first and second periods respectively, and frequently found themselves with complete freedom around the Terrace net. For the Kings Bob Wasson and Ray Wheaton recorded hat Lricks, Richard Wright picked up two goals and Joe Citolli, Gord Stephens, Barry Jeboult, Rick Spracklin and Dave Pickett picked up singles, Brad Riley led the way for the Timbermen as he picked up two goals and Doug Matheson picked up the other Terrace marker. ‘The lack of musele and some hard hitting King defenders proved to be the locals downfall as the Kings continually beat them to the puck. Prince Rupert was also allowed to roam freely in the Terrace end and passed the puck almost at will. The next action for the Timbermen is tonight when they travel to Kitimat to face the Winter Hawk's.
