Cold mornings often mean
frosted windshields. And a
most frequent query of the
Britis olumbia
Automobile Association
personnel during the winter
season pertains to the
removal of this ice con-
dition.

The application of hot
water, probably the most
frequently used method of
removing frost, is definitely
not recommended, says
BCAA. Applied to a frosty
windshield, hot walter can
crack the glass. Even if the
windshield survives, the
original problem remains,
as the surface will quickl
glaze over again unless ail
moisture is removed. In
addition, water will
frequently cause the wind-
shield wi to freeze and
ice up. Water, then, is not
the answer. Ne liq’ id should
be applied to a frosted
windshield.

Another ‘‘don’t’’ when
trying to remove windshield
frost involves windshield
wipers. Heavy frost is made
up of extremely abrasive ice
crystals that can quickly
destroy the rubber contact
surfaces of. wiper blades.

So much for the “don'ts”
— here are the “do's”.

The simplest and often the .
easiest way of clearing a
heavily frosted windshield is

-the use of a non-abrasive

scraping tool followed by the
application of a dry, clean
squeegee, cloth, or paper
towel.

variety of tools specifically
designed for this purpose;

cumulating frost in the first

motorists driving in near or
below freezing tem-
peratures can be improper
use of windshield washers.
Obviously, water squirted
on the external surface of a
windshield under these
conditions will freeze in-
stantly on contact. This will
do two things: obscure the

‘driver’s vision and tear the

windshield wiper blades.
Although there - are .anti-
freeze solutions
manufactured for use. in
windshield washer reser-
voirs, it is best not to use
washers when driving in
freezing weather.

It is also important that .
motorists know that
radiator anti-freeze and the
chemicals used in special
windshield washer reservolr
additives are guite dif-
ferent. Should radiator anti-
freeze be used for wind-
shield washing, it can
seriously damage _ the
painted surface of the
automobile. :

BCAA strongly recom-
mends that the entire
windshield area, plus rear
and side windows, be ren-
dered frost free before even
leaving the driveway on cold
mornings. It is also a good
practice to check all mirrors
— not only the rearview
mirror ingide the car, but
external mirrors as well.

Care instructions .on flame
reaistant textiles should be
followed strictly because bm-
proper care may even make’
the fabric highly flammable.
-For example, soap and hard
water mineral deposits can
counteract the effect of
flame-retardant finishes,
