The lithe 100-pound Indian
maiden churned across the course,
her long black hair trailing be-
hind, before any of the other
girls reached the halfway mark.

Her windmill style is combin-
ed with a remarkable ability to
get along: without air. Some-
times she takes 20 strokes with-

Betty is training now for a
distance swim of five miles to
Iron Island, offshore in the lake.
Her 16-year-old brother, also a
self-taught swimmer, can make
it with ease.

Earlier this year she was
thwarted in her first try when
waves ,hurled her boat against
her and knocked her unconscious.
She was more than two miles
out at the time, and swimming
strongly in spite of the choppy
seas.

- Her father, Charlie Goulais,
65, a veteran trapper’and hydro
pensioner, thinks five miles is |
plenty for a 14-year-old girl. |
Real marathon work can come in
a couple of years, he says.

Betty graduated from public
school with honors last June
and will take a stenographer’s
course at Sturgeon Falls High:

€vada’s Lake Mead when his craft sunk under him. One of
the floats sprang a leak in choppy water after Campbell had
attained a speed of 160 miles an hour, far short of the mark

Strongest man in the world

Soviet weightlifters pressed, snatched and jerked their way
to four titles and won the international weightlifting champion-

ships held in Munich, Germany this month.

But the title of

“world’s strongest man,” once held by Canada’s Doug Hepburn,
went to U.S. heavyweight lifter Paul Anderson (above) who set

a new record for the big fellows.

PEAKING of football, it takes
22 to tangle, and our Lions
showed plenty when they tan-
bled. with Calgary last Satur-
day. It wasn’t that the Stamps
were so bad, as some sports
scribes sneered, but rather that
Lions did everything right, in-
cluding blocking (a major de-
fect in the past) and intercep-
tion* of pass plays.

Lions have about as much
chance of catching the playoffs
as a wax dog would have of
catching an asbestos cat in
Hades. But there’s always
another year, so cheer up, my
lads, bless ’em all.

Will Soviet boxers someday
compete against pro boxers in
other countries ?

This question came to mind
while I was reading an account
of a tournament between Soviet
and English amateur ringmen,
held a fortnight ago in Lon-
don. “

opponent ? Rocky thinks there
should be a round-robin in-

Sunday a woman told me she
had enjoyed last week’s article
on “Canadian firsts’ in sports
and mentioned that her hus-
band, in his youth, had been
an active member of the Can-
adian Wheelmen, the first
cycling club on the North
American continent.
