US. firm grabs for vast

new Canadian gas fields

A U.S. natural gas company is
making a bid to build. two
pipelines in an attempt to grab
control of recently discovered
gas fields in northern Alberta and
Northwest Territories for export
to the U.S.

The company — Northern
Natural Gas Co. of Omaha, Neb.,
— announced that one of the
pipelines it intends to build will
be 36 inches in diameter and will
cost $1.4 billion. It will carry 360
million cubic feet daily at the
start, increasing to 960 million
cubic feet by 1979.

Another pipeline — from the
Pointed Mountain area in the
Northwest Territories — will
also be 36. inches, and will be in
use by late 1974, provided the
U.S. company gets permission

from the Canadian government:

to go ahead. This pipeline will
cost about $1 billion, and will
carry 360 million cubic feet daily,
rising to 1.8 billion cubic feet by
1979.

The pipelines will be built by
the Consolidated Pipe Lines Co.
of Calgary in which the U.S.
company recently acquired
controlling interest. When the
pipelines reach capacity they
will carry over 2 billion cubic
feet of Canadian natural gas a
day to the U.S.

The Northern Natural Gas Co.,
serves more than 1,000 cities and
communities in the U.S.
midwest, and will likely extend
the area it serves in the U.S. with
the vast new supply from
Canada.

The U.S. company is now in the
process of applying to the
National Energy Board in
Ottawa for approval to proceed
with the plan. To help smooth the
way the Omaha company has
acquired the services of a former
chairman of the National Energy

If permission is granted to this
U.S. company it will mark a
further long step towards
integration of Canada with the
U.S. It will strengthen the
continental approach to North
American resources for which
the U.S. has been pressing. This
is particularly true of those in
the U.S. who want to strengthen
this trend so as to open the way

for a later continental develop-
ment of Canada’s’ water,
resources.

That is why every progressive
Canadian should oppose the
application of the Northern .
Natural Gas Co., before the
National Energy Board in
Ottawa and demand the gas be
used for Canadian development.
