page 6 Guild News Ie's hard to believe che surmmer is almost over - how time flies!! While the heard technically takes a break for the month of July, several committee meetings have been held, and several things have been going on in the background. At the June board Meeting, the committes scructure was changed to include a Guild committee to focus on the business of the Guild: membership, marketing, funding, and help in the office. The membership committee is pursuing the possibiliry of changing the year of membership from the calendar year to the year from date of purchase in order to foster new memberships throughout the year. More information will be passed on in future newsletters as the details are ironed out. A big step chis committee has already undertaken is to give current members registered in a PGOBC workshop a $5 credit note from the Gallery of BC Ceramics, valid towards a gallery purchase or membership renewal, When issued in association with a workshop, these credic notes are only valid until January 31/99. Non-members who register in workshops are also welcome to obtain the $5 credit, valid towards a new membership only. The first workshop to offer this discount is the Phil Rogers Workshop, to be held at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby, September 26 & 27. There will be a slide lecture at the False Creek Community Centre on Thursday, September 24th. See the article om page | fer more informasion. tn the lase issue of the newsletter from oh, 40 many months ago, [ indicared that we would use the summer months to develop a user-friendly format for providing the membership with pertinent information regarding our budget forecasts for membership dues, etc. Well, needless to say, the summer was a little busier chan anticipated, and of course this item was overlooked. We'll try to set something up for a furure swe! The workshop committee, part of the new events committee, had commirted co four workshops for the summer months: Patrick Horsely, Randy Brodnax, Dannon Rhudy, and Phil Rogers. Parrick Horsley, held at the end of June at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts (and co-sponsored with Shadbolt), nected the Guild a small profit of almost $200. The week-long intensive raku workshop with Randy Brodnax was unfortunately canceled due to lack of registration, Co-sponsored with the Tozan Cultural Society, Acrowsmith Potters Guild, Nanaimo Portery Co-ap and Porters Guild of BC, the Danson Rhudy Workshop was held on August 22nd & 23rd, after the unloading of the Tozan kiln on the morning of che 22nd. And Lastly, again co- sponsored with Shadbelt Centre, is Phil Rogers at the end of Seprember. Many, many thanks to all those involved in the organization of these great workshops! The Poreers Guild of BC is very pleased to be able to co-sponsor workshops wich other organizations, and looks forward to more such opportunities. [s chere someone that your local group would like to have broughec in for a workshop? We would be very interested in co-sponsoring workshops throughout the province, perhaps secting up mini-tours for visiting povters. Please contace Jane at the Guild office (604,669- 5645) or Aaron Nelson (604/708-0712). Many thanks to Karen Qpas, who took on the organization of the second annual “Too Good for the Shard Pile Sale”, Big thanks are also due to the potters who donated their ‘seconds’ to help us raise money for capital expendicures, The June weekend was hot and sunny, and this year's Shard Sale raised $1650, Thanks co all! New Guild Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 - 10:30am Monday and Wednesday, 3:30 - 5:30pm Please phone ahead to make appointments if you wish to drop by in person, or please reach me by phone during these times. In the previous newsletter, | had introduced office hours to enable me to organize my time more efficiently, The summer months proved to be a difficult time to instigate this formalized struccure, and so the trial period continues for the time being. Perhaps two days per week would be more suitable than chopped up howrs...! Gallery News The Gallery has been very busy over the summer months - our low Caradian dollar is Proving to be a great lure for our pottery-minded neighbours w the south, Casual estimates suggest that our shipping volume has increased approx. 30% over last summer, which has thus increased the Gallery staff's workload substantially. Sales in June were 21% higher chan last summer, and 7% higher chan targeted, helping to close the gap for the year to date sales. July proved to be less exciting, with a 9% drop from July ‘97 but on even par with our targec. Currently exhibiting in the Gallery is Embellishments, recent work by Princeton artist Graeme Allemeersch, Following Graeme is Small is Beautiful, an exhibic of small vessels and lidded containers by Takako Suzuki. The Gallery will be expanding into the old Studio 5 space: the exhibit area will be moving to the area in front of the garage door, and a storage room (yes, a toom!!) will be built in che narrow end of the Gallery. We have enlisted the help of an industrial desigmer who is designing a new sales desk, incorporating recycled timbers and other materials, and some new display units.
