Crane into Tozan Stage 1: the Kiln-Razing As everyone must know by now, the Tozan Kiln Society, headed by Les Beardsley through the Nanaimo Arts Council is building, on land donated by Malaspina College, what will be only the 3rd kiln of its type in the world - a traditional, multi chamber, hill climbing, wood-fired dragon. The others are in Japan & Flagstaff, Artaona. It is, perhaps, somewhat anachronistic in an age of high-tech materials and design but this is a project that concems our roots: our roots in community and with the four elements. It's a project to fire the imagination. It's more than encouraging how from an idea, the project has grown with donations of land, ilorage, equipment, transport and suddenly with the closing of Crane, the Tozan become very real with the availability of all the bricks from the dismantling of the enormous Crane tunnel kiln, Words and numbers (it’s 350 ft long) mean very little. You have to see this monster ta appreciate the scale and also the commitment of a small core of dedicated people taking this thing apart brick by brick, (at Agate Lane} | am reminded of the story of the Chinese 658-8072 VICTORM Monk who each day as he travelled over a hill, took a» A a stone each way from the top. Eventually the hill MB. Bs. was no morc. In reality the bricks are caming out faster than they can be cleaned as stacked.
