A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 10, 1999 Red ink still flows at school district COAST MOUNTAIN Schoo] District 82 is deep in the red and trustees don’t expect te soon see a change. The school district an- nounced at a board mecling March 3 that it is running a $730,000 budget deficit. Next school year it ex- pects to be a_ further $250,000 in the red, not in- cluding the expected drop in enrollment. “It doesn’t look good,” said Kitimat trustee Peter King. Anywhere from 125 to 150 students are expected to disappear next year, which would mean a further loss of $400,000 to $600,000 in government per capita grants. What that means is next year there will be fewer teachers and more cults, said acting superintendent Sharon Beedfe, "Next year is going to be just as tough,”’ Beedle said. “Services that are eliminated now, won’t be back.”’ The current round of cost- savings include cuts. to cleri- cal time, custodian work hours, library assistance time in — Kitimat, a “The majority of cuts are small amounts at the ex- pense of support staff,’’ Beedle said. Trustees stressed that ad- ministrative cuts this school year have helped reduce the deficit. Seven administrative posi- tions were climinated this school year including an as- sistant secrelary-treasurer, an assistant superintendent, district vice’ principal, direc- tor of instruction for First Nations education, principal for First Nations education, district principal for music anda vice principal in Kitimat. “We're buming out our senior administration and running ~into problems,’ said trustee Roger Leclerc. “We may be understaffed if anything.” maintenance foreman posi- tion in Kitimat and clerical re staff in Kitimat. Moncy is also being saved by holding more board meetings in Terrace, con- ducting committee meetings by long distance phone, reducing school budget sup- plies and reducing adminis- tration travel costs.
