A12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 10, 1996 Out to stop smuaqaling Feds ponder THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is looking at a number of options, includ- ing a manned post, to stop the flow of smuggled alcohol and tobacco between Hyder, Alaska and Stewart. Customs officials estimale as.much as 36 million a year is lost in unpaid duties aud excise fees because there is no con- trol at the border between the two towns. And while they don’t expect to reclaim all of that, they do think there’s potential to increase government revenues. ‘Part of the idea of a border is to pro- tect Canadian busincsses,’’ said customs official Dan McGrath. “Tf we can come up with a system where duties are paid or if the money slays in Canada, we can keep the field level,” he said in referring to smuggled goods being cheaper to buy because. The federal government has drawn the ire of Stewart and Hyder residents with a recent requirement that people passing back and forth over the border call Cana- da Customs each time they do so even if they don't make a purchase, And if they do buy something, they are Supposed to report it and mail in ap- propriate taxes and duties. A meeting three wecks ago in Stewart With customs officials was attended by more than 120 people. A manned border post was one sugges- tion and that’s being pursued by customs officials. No cost estimates are yet available but officials indicate as many as five people would be needed for 3 a seven day a week, 24 hour a day opcration. “The strong message sent was that we don’t like what’s going on now and if they want to do something, they should do it properly and that’s to have a full time border post,”’ said Stewart mayor Andy Burton. He said a manned post would do much to keep money now being spent on smuggled alcohol and tobacco in Cana- da.
