Six months Notices for Crown Granta == " “ Purchaseof Land + - “| ** Tfeenee t Prospect for Coal For many months Sir Richard _ MeBride has been searching for a horse of some kind to ride through the coming provincial campaign. Not a single caynse showed up until the business men of the province demanded prohibition. Sir Richard immediately grasped at it, got astride, and will endea- vor to make prohibition a leading feature. Sir Richard has always had the liquor interests at his back, and they have been an im- portant factor in past elections. But in recent years the liquor in- terests, particularly hotel men, have been dissatisfied with their treatment. Sir Richard dare not openly declare himself for prohi- bition even though he would per- -sonally care to: neither dare he oppose the influential. business ‘men throughout the province. So the foxy grandpa says he will ask the people to decide for him. Sir Richard is sailing a very rough ‘sea in a very light canoe, and his stand on prohibition will not as- sist him either with the liquor “people or with the prohibitionists. Irrespective of what the people ‘decide as to that question, it is certain that the province has had -a fill of Sir Richard McBride, ‘Hon. W. J. Bowser and all their Yes, § Sir, Me Too’s.”? The soon- ‘er the election comes on the soon- _er will the Liberals be given the power, and the sooner will the ‘people begin | to eonvert British ‘Columbia from a wild-cat boom- -erang into a producing’ province. People who have done some “travelling during the’ past few “months and who are ina position , to.express opinions upon the com- ‘mercial affairs of the Dominion give British Columbia people ‘some food for thought.: It never ‘ dawned upon these people, for * many years residents of this pro- - vine, that British. Columbia ‘was “mot a producing province and that - it was existing upon false: props “lerected with money. secured ‘from ‘other provinces and. ‘other coun- -tries. Atthe first sign. of trouble io the’ world British -Columbie “for. this province : ' “fects of the: war nore: thing. to offer the warring nations who are prepared to: pay “almost any price. down. When times. were good ‘land money plentiful, . production was neglected and opportunities were wasted. The peoplein the province are partly to blame, but "lthey were set an extremely bad example by the provincial gov- ernment, which lavishly expend- jed many millions of money with- out a consideration of results. 0 |Needless to say the. government |received no results for its money, and today the wealthiest province in the Dominion is the poorest. FARMING. HINTS | + + During the past two years, ex- perimental work has been carried on with the various styles of poultry housé at the Central sta- tion, Ottawa, and a-bulletin will be issued this fall giving: the re- sults of these experiments, also plans and particulars of houses that haye proven most satisfac- tory. Numerous experiments of a different nature have heen in progress. These have included the relative value of eggs or day- old chicks for shipping, express or parcel post: shipping of eggs in various stages of incubation; marketing of stock, especially of green ducks and broilers, the| best means of catering to a new- laid egg trade; how best to. pro- duce the stuff and how best to| put it into the consumers’ hands; experiments in incubation, fer- tility, brooding, ‘rearing, feeding and feeds, mortality in chicks and ducklings, and many others, all of which will be reported. surplus is supplied to the branch farms and experimental stations from which stock and eggs are British Colum bia’ fell. sold at reasonable rates to the | farmers. in the ‘community’ as||° long as the supply lasts. ; The poultry division of the ex- perimental farms system is fast getting into a. “position. where it will be able ‘te give information gained by practical experience on all questions of production. No other occupation opens so wide a field for profitable and agreeable combination of labor with cultivated thought as agri- culture. Population must- in- crease rapidly, more rapidly than in former years, and ere long the ‘tmost valuable of all arts will be the art of deriving . subsistence from the soil. No community, whose every member possesses this art, can ever be the victim of oppression in any of its forme. Such community will alike ‘be in- dependent of. crowned ‘kings, of money kings and of land kings. — Abraham Lincoln. ne - COAL NOTICES — ‘Hazelton: Land District District of: .: Coaast,.Range .
