That the City of Port Coquitlam's participation in Celebration "88" be limited to the Awards Program. 26 That the Mayor appoint a three member awards selection committee and that this be done anonymously. Background & Comments: The Federal Government of Canada has initiated Celebration 88 which is a national celebration of the 15th Winter Olympics. The purpose of the project is: "To provide opportunities for as many Canadians as possible from all walks of life to participate in the spirit of these Games and to generate a sense of pride and accomplishment in that Canada is hosting these Games, thereby promoting national unity." There are several elements as to how the loeal community can become involved such as creating a local Celebration "88" Committes tS help plan local activities and staging of local events; providing an education and youth package to facilitate the involvement of school children; creating a Celebration 88 awards program to recognize deserving Canadians on a local level. The major components of the program are: a) Celebration Awards b) Olympic Coin Fundraiser a) Celebration 88 Local School Competitions d) The Olyupiv Speaker Servizse e) Winter Festival 2
