Saturday, May 3rd as Elks Purple Cross Deaf Detection Day in

recognition of the campaign being carried on by the Elks and their
auxiliary the Order of the Royal Purple, to bring about the early
identification of hearing handicaps, with emphasis on the Canadian
‘child. a
"The prevalence of congenital (born deaf) hearing loss is

more common than ordinarily understood. It.is believed that
‘approximately one and one-half to three percen*, of the infants born
in Canada each year have a hearing loss severe enough to require
special cducation or help. This could mean 6,000 to 12,000 children
yearly.

a Because of thoir concern with the early identification of
those born with this hearing loss, the Elks and their auxiliary
the Order of the Royal Purple have pledged themselves to carry on

a program of deaf detection and development and that's what Elks
