seaeepreenguan sme emg ware | CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag — Teachers and Telus | workers deserve community support Dear Sir: I have been watching the media coverage of the Telus- — TWU workers lock out situ- ation, and I am completely amazed at the stories that. seem to be occurring.., Why is. that? First, there ‘is the article where it is’stat- ed that they are on strike... Let it be known that they are locked out and in their elev- enth week. They. and their families are suffering finan- cially. It is the employer, and in this case, the CEO, Mr. Dar- - ren Entwhistle who chooses to do whatever he sees fit, so that the investors in New York, or wherever support ‘him in his actions. Prior to the lock out, they have had record profits for at least. two years running, and they can’t negotiate a collec- tive agreement now? What is their excuse? No money? I think not. More flexibility? Now folks, that is just another name for con- tracting out services that * has been traditional work of. those Telus ‘employees. who have worked hard to ensure that you have the quality ser- . ._ Vice you have now. They may have been making profits but they. are in collective agreement ar- » years for. more than four or | five years. Tell th 1 t ° ose rep acement support some of this kind of workers that you will kindly : wait for the ‘Telus workers that are currently locked out for the services you require. ' Then there is the report- - . ‘ing of the Kitimat incident involving a Telus vehicle and one driven by two union members. _ There. are usually two ‘sides“to-every story, but it “seems that only the replace- ment worker story was lis- ‘Shelley Ar Anderson tened to. Well, I guess that will ail ‘come ‘out in the wash at the _ end of the day.. _ Instead, and more to the point, the entire court injunc- tion given to Telus to: regu- ‘late picketing is completely one’ sided. This isn’t collective bar- gaining. This is imposition of working. conditions and wages that a company, a corporation or a government wants to impose a group of workers, - Is this what we can now expect when our collective agreements expire? It seems that the fed- eral government has. even a lower standard than the provincial Liberals’in Brit- _ish Columbia, although I’m guessing that they kind of | employer behaviour. But then, maybe not. We: can always hope: that they have come to their senses. As we all know, . teachers in this. wonderful province of. British Colum- bia are now also under the gun.. _ Although the expres- government action. almost literal? — the ” truly. hope that you make: | How so, people might ask.. Legislated back to work, threatened with a all ; kinds of legal action: ~- ‘ Do you know what ki of diatribe they are spread ing in the schools with the .. kids? .“You might have to go to school in the summer or you might’ have to repeat your grade.” It’s not written anywhere, i it's being told somewhere, to ' our children. 4 Having kids of school age in three different schools — and having them come home with the same story worries “me. | Parents, you should be _ on. mo, . ‘You ‘should question the . administration, and the gov- ernment and send them pro- test emails. And you should give those teachers a real show of support because they are the ones who have the best interests of your children at. heart. I ask you, all of you, within our communities, do you-want to be dictated to? ; Do you want to be pre- sented with right to work legislation,, because that could be next. - Do you want to ‘lose - the ‘ability of free thought, , whether you be a person who in general supports the con- ae * cept ofa corporate structure, or someone who supports a - | - social and giving economic environment.
