Although this is no surprise ta me, it does however, enhance the very serious concerns raised over the years by myself, CASAW-CAW and the District of Kitimat in respect to allowing Alcan to facilitate downsizing their aluminum operation to sell hydroelectric power. The announcement made by Mr. Thorpe on behalf of the B.C. government was a sellout anda complete be- trayal to the people of Kitimat and the northwest corridor of B.C. as a whole. : CAW Local 2301, which represents: 1300 members in the smelter who would be directly impacted by Thorpe’s decision, was not consulted for input and was not even given the courtesy of meeting with him even though for- mal requests were made through Thorpe’s office and to his executive assistant prior to him coming to Terrace and Kitimat on Aug. 16. , : This certainly implies to me that there was no room for meaningful input or consultation because the deci- ‘Fresh start’ doesn't mean an inferior labour contract Dear Sir: The new words in town, ‘Fresh Start,’ being mouthed by the new mill guy and the business community needs to be put on paper and given some critical thought. The concessions sought by the new guy are not just about a 20 per cent pay cut, There are cuts to the WA Master agreement that will put the workers here back 24 years. There is a fresh start for you, sign. here ‘and start over, 24 years of negotiating, strikes, lock outs, bad feelings, the town closed for a summer of strike. And the sawmill across the street pays the union rate, keeps working and making money. Merchants in town must realize the 20 or 30 per cent pay cuts mean that workers will have that much less to purchase goods from the stores. The unions, of course are to blame. This new guy cuts a deal with the government (previous owner) that gives him $26.9 million of assets that he can sell tomorrow, and not touch his capital in- frastructure, for $8 million plus taxes owed to our cities. He then objects ta Paying these taxed, t then does, not place of negotiations. 4 This mill needs a fresh start. This mill does not need to go back in time 24 years. Alcan has successfully manipulated Mr. Campbell and his government and will continue to prosper (i.e. selling power) but-it will be at the demise of the work- force; community and the northwest as a whole. The days of Alcan as a significant producer of alumi- num in Kitimat may very well be numbered.
