College official Barb Sheridan said last week the pro- vince has promised to appoint new members very soon. It’s an accepted practice for new governments to re-_ scind the appointments made by their predecessors on various boards and commissions under théir: control. Final say in who is chosen rests with a special ap-_ - pointments branch attached to Premier Gordon _Camp- bell’s office. “The province has asked us what we need in terms of expertise,” said Sheridan last week, She said four of the board members to be dismissed have re-applied. The current board is a mixture of community appoin- tees from across the northwest, student and staff repre- sentatives. — The 11 current community appoiniges were chosen by the province and come fram communities across the northwest. The chair is Claudia Knight, who represents Stewart. Rad Arnold and Ed Harrison are community represen- tatives from Terrace. Lorene Plante is the community board member from the Nass. “The province has asked us what we need in terms of expertise.” ‘Two of the board members were elected from the stu- dent body, one from the faculty, one from the college’s ‘support staff and one from the college’s education coun- cil, which gives advice on the college's educational dir- ection. College president Stephanie Forsyth also sits on the board. “Current provincial legislation requires that representa- tives from the education council, students, faculty staff ‘ and the college president sit on the board. It’s-unclear as to what their status will be. The college has several challenges facing it, inchid- ing what to do about-a $1.5 million hole in the ground that was to be the site of its new Prince Rupert campus until the project was frozen by the new government. But it also has had a recent success - the approval of a licensed practical nursing program based in Terrace which admitted 26 students Jan. 21, Search for new principals starts after school’s out THE TASK of finding permanent re- placements for two Terrace high school principals will wait until June. The Coast Mountains School Dis- trict will recruit new principals for Ca- ledonia Senior Secondary and Skeena Junior Secondary once the school year wraps up. People are reluctant to change jobs at this time of year, district superinten- dent Randy Smallbrugge said. “We know from experience that the spring time is the best time to look in- ternally or externally for candidates,” he said. Meanwhile, former Hazelton sec- ondary principal Vic Dikaitis has been named acting principal of Skeena Ju- nior. Dikaitis replaces former principal Rob Greenwood, who is now one of the district’s assistant superintendents. Caledonia Senior’s long-time prin- cipal Geoff Straker will be leaving his job at the end of February because he’s heading to China. “We know .from exper- fence that the spring time is the best time to look in- ternally or externally for candidates.” Straker has been hired as the vice principal of the Maple Leaf Interna- tional School, B.C.’s only independent, international school. Although Straker’s new jab is tem- porary, he wants School District 82 to find a permanent replacement for him at Caledonia. Mount Elizabeth Senior Secondary vice principal Bruce Daniels has been named acting principal of Caledonia. _ Fly Masks / Bug Spray White Pants / Shirts, Etc.
