A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 5, 2000 Unfair criticism of our MLA Dear Sir: I want to ‘comment about the letter to The Mail Bag, The Terrace Standard, March 22, 2000 by Lorne Sexton about Skeena NDP MLA Helmut Giesbrecht, Mr. Sexton, it is very easy to kick someone when he is down. How- ever, you should know the real loser is the one who thinks he is doing the kicking. What did you accomp- lish during the past’ eight years? As far back as I can remember time and again you got knocked down with your futile recalls. Instead you wasted all that energy trying to dis- pose of an MLA who was in a position to work very hard ta keep several thou- sand people employed. You tried to take the bread out of those workers’ children's mouths, Can you visualize what would hap- pen if those communities dependent on the logging industry were shut down today? Take that red cloth away from your eyes and look reality"in the face. Put your money where your mauth is and run for public’ office. Then write about matters where ap- parently you have no clue or knowledge of. People who complain should do better. Manfred Bader, Thornhill, B.C. CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD Try damp mop at the airport Dear Sir: Airplane crashes and emergency landings are happen- ing more and more frequently. Meanwhile, thanks to the finance minister Paul Mar- tin, local taxpayers now own an airport — a business ven- ture with the same prospect as an ice cream parlour on the north pole. The brain trust governing this venture have now deci- ded that fire protection can be handled by a pickup and fire extinguisher. Let me suggest to them that there are financially more attractive ways than the pickup. You could increase the airport fee from $19 to $20 and issue free water bottles to passengers who, if no fire occurred, would keep the bottle, thereby creating a small industry. Another idea less desirable because it involves wages, minimum of course, would be to have a janitor standing by with a damp mop. John Jensen, Terrace, B.C. Quebec has it very good Dear Sir: . Where there is to be a winner there has to be a loser. When it comes federal government largess, the province of Quebec is the hands down winner yet again. Jn the fiscal year 1998-99, Ottawa collected $10.7 bil- lion from British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario and re- distributed it.to:.the’so-called ‘have not’ provinces. And | Quebec received $5.4 billion. Year after year it’s ihe same story. One province; rich in natural resources, having less than one quarter of the population of Canada, is on the receiving end of over one half of all government grants and contributions. The political elite of Quebec would be well advised to consider the plight of their provincial economy before considering another extortion attempt by holding yet an- other referendum on separation, One of these days the provinces that pay the country's bills are going to call their bluff, and Quebec will be for- ced to beg to be allowed to stay in the country, rather than us pleading with them not to go, The hand that is continually feeding is also capable — of slapping. Did you know that the City of Terrace is planning to privatize the residential garbage pick up? Currently the residents of Terrace enjoy a garbage pick If residential garbage pick up is privatized the quality of service which you now enjoy will no longer be there. Each residence will be restricted to two cans. Any extra bags that are collected will cost the homeowner $1 per bag with profits going directly to the contractor. Homeowners will pay for their garbage pick up without any decrease in their taxes. It’s time for citizens and taxpayers of Terrace to speak Tell the Mayor and City Council what you think about the serious potential for loss of quality service through privatization of residential garbage pick up. 638-4778 a i
