_) POWDER: LINES GARY MALTIN _ The Road Trip rom Dec. 12 to Jan. 10 I took a road trip with my two-year-old son, Henry. The road trip has been a quintessential parl of skiing since _ vehicles were invented and an integral part of society since time immemorial, The following are some of the stops Henry and I made during our tour. Day Five, Sun Peaks — Part I: Going back to Tod Mountain with my son in tow was a homecoming for both of us. This was the site of my progression from “guy who skis’’ to “‘skier’’, Henry’s first home, and perhaps more importantly — his first chairlift ride. I had planned to show Henry the hill, ski with some friends and their Kids, and to track down some of my patroller buddies inthe process. The mountain had unfortunately (or not) changed policy regarding skiing with children in backpacks, thus it- was time for my boy to stand on his own two skis for the first time, From 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Henry refused to stop — it took coaxing and promises of hot chocolate to pry him out of his bindings. Day 15, Drumheller. Skiing in Drumheller? You bet your dinosaur butt. Where else can you go rip it up in the morning then time travel back 500 million years or so at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, both entertaining and educa- ting the offspring in the process. The hills around Drum- heller were the playground of my youth — hiking, fossil hunting, dirt biking in the summer and tobogganing in the winter. It was a treat showing my son the grotesque beauty of the Drumheller Valley and the skiing was actually quite good, thanks to an excellent snow making system. When Henry decided to have his afternoon nap, the staff were happy to keep a watchful eye while Dad showed Drumhel- ler youth a bit about hard-boot carving (an extremely rare snowboard event here). The hill isn’t large, but then, size isn’t everything, It’s surreal riding up a chairlift five minutes or so and emerging at the top to a 360 degree panorama of gently rolling prairie frosted white. Day 22, Fortress Mountain. Fortress has lost none of the charm of the smali, family-oriented, rocking, powder- bump haven that it was 15 or 20 years ago. After a few warm-up runs on the well-groomed first and second chutes of the Canadian (with Henry along for the ride), 1 met up with ‘‘Gerald, The Austrian’? and his six-year-old daughter Alex. Following some runs down the bunny hill with Henry under his own steam, it was time for lunch and the boy’s nap. After a few more runs with Gerald and Alex it was time to strike out on my own before resuming paren- tal responsibility. A classic bump mm, Watch Me, looked tempting even for my frail knees. I nailed the first ran — a miracle to me and those who've seen me in the bumps — but it was back to reality the second time down with two double ejections to prave it, Another of my Fortress favourites, the powder in the trees was also in excellent SN Pacific Emergency . With the less than perfect visibility we ripped down a tree run called Aspen many a time, the riding was ‘out of this world and getting some hints from my German pal Andreas, ‘a world-class boarder, helped a ton. Having shredded up tlie trees, we moved to Steamboat, Vail and Heavenly Valley, ‘Day 27, Rogers-Pass. A touring Mecca would come clase to describing this BIG area. Clifnbing up the Bostock Creek drainage with Rob and Dana, an assistant heli-guide, ended my favorite part of the day. The descent down McGill shoulder gave me serious problents® A “metre of down a hellish chore, Ob well, the scéncry and the compa- ny was well worth the price of admission. Day 30, Sun Peaks — Part II, A call to the snow phone confirmed it — 20 centimetres of fresh dry interior champagne had fallen the night previous. Forgoing break- fast, and even morning coffee — it was off to the hill five minutes away, for a balf day of fun. While unloading gear and dreaming of first tracks I'ran into a couple of my old Tod ski brethren — Barry and Lee. Gur warm-up run was The Ridge, Then, alter a 50 mile-per-hour carpet ride to the Burfield Chair, it was time for some serious skiing. The Chief, Shoulder, Highway 22, Kucamungas, Waddies Dream, and double-black Expo all saw the bottom of our skis and were in exquisite shape. Face shots and hoots of glee were plenty as my friends and I flew down with semi- reckless abandon, Yet another homecoming in a trip filled with many such moments.
