Afier a hard working life, Jean passed away in Decem- ber. She’s sadly missed by ‘her husband Hans Koehl, ‘their children and many ’ friends. Jean was born in 1919 in Springfield, Manitoba. She ‘was the youngest child of a ‘Polish immigrant family — ‘the only girl with five brothers. Sadly she lost her mother ‘when she was just onc, and ‘grew up in the harsh winters ‘and searing summers of the ’ prairies, | When Jean was young her ‘father remarricd and Jean ‘felt she was treated badly by ‘her new step-tnothers. So ‘She decided to leave her ‘home and the farm life at rage 14, ‘ She moved to Toronto, ‘and found work there in a ‘department store. But she ‘soon discovered retail work ‘was too tame for her and ‘went on to become a ‘delivery truck driver for ‘Simpson Sears. ' Before long she felt she ‘knew the city well enough ito apply for a job as a taxi ‘driver. She was the cily’s ‘first woman taxi driver! : Jean stayed in Toronto through the war years, tak- ing a job delivering dynamite for the army. * While in Toronto Jean met and married a man wilh the last name of Phillpot, The couple was blessed with a baby girl. Unfortunately, HERE ‘N THERE _ YVONNE MOEN family influence tore apart thal marriage and in 1941 Jean headed west. In Alberta Jean found her broiler Emie who'd also left home at an early age. They hadn't seen cach other for 13 years, Together Jean and Emie . drove to Vancouver. He found work at the Burrard .. dry dock and remained there till his retirement. Jean found a job driving a laundry truck. Then over the next few years she had a number of jobs — logging camp cook, waitress, salesperson, taxi driver and’ business woman. Eventually Jean ended up in Terrace in the 1960s, driving a taxi and doing house keeping for Hans Koehl and his five children. In time love blossomed and Jean and Hans were married in 1976. Their life together was ac- tive, filled with the out- doors, travelling, fishing ° and berry picking. Jeau was astrong indepen- dent person who found it necessary td put on a hard- . front, She was someone who’s first instinct was to fight back, to protect herself at all costs, something she’d lcamed as a young child. Undemeath that front was a heart of gold, a fragile soul who would give her all, She was a loyal aud loving friend to those who earned her trust. ‘ Jean Catherine Koehl A funeral service for Jean was held Dec. 9, Her husband Hans plans to return soon to his original homestead in Lintlaw, Sas- katchewan, as his brother just passed away. The government has pur- chased the family’s land and plans to make it a bird sanctuary. There will be a monument to the Koehl family there.
