Mushroom plan slammed A Torrace-based group calling itself the Northwest Mushroom Pickers’ Coalition is calling on the provincial government to “cease and desist’’ with any regulation of the pine mushroom harvest, But the Ministry of Forests has other plans. On Thursday, Forests Minister Andrew Petter released a Pine Mushroam ‘Task, Force report calling for management of pine mushrooms and other non-timber, forest-based resources. “We are extremely upset by how this report has been hand- led,’ said Coalition spokesman Al Grier. ‘‘Our group circulated petitions and tried to hold a town information meeting, but the min- istry wouldn’t address our con- cems.”’ Grier is upset about informal in- terviews with pickers being used as part of the task force findings, But ngro-forestry specialist Nel- ly de Geus said the interviews helped give an overview of the industry and the issues involved, ‘Pickers feared they didn’t have a voice with land use plan- ners because mushroom picking wasn't recognized as a legitimate industry,’ said De Geus. Their comments were not used as official findings. From a government standpoint, environmental damage to forests, harvesting in provincial parks and picking on Nisga’a territory are | » primary issues, Now that the report has identi- fied key areas of concern, the - focus is on the public. Task force officials will hold regional open houses in early July in Terrace, Nelson, and Chil- liwack, Smaller community meetings in Hazelton and New Aiyansh will “be held in the fall when their picking seasons are in full swing. Task force member Ralph Ar-, chibald, of the forests ministry, says they’re not trying 10 kill the industry. City takes in a tiny sextet ANIMAL SHELTER sisff have new guests, six apparently or- phaned ducklings. The feathered sextet were ~ spolted early last week at the + edge of the Skeena Cellulose log yard on Keith Ave, A search of the area having found no sign of Momma and with reports of people trying to catch them, staff stepped in. Capture, however, was no easy task, says animal control officer Frank Bowsher. Small but fast, the ducklings were also well camouflaged when they got in among the roadside brush. However, the rescue operation was eventually successful and the ducklings are now lodged in the wildlife room at the shelter. There’s still a question though as to whether the quackers really qualify to be there, whether they are wild or domestic. Bowsher said George Kofoed — he’s licenced by the Fish and Wildlife branch to care for young or injured birds — had a look at the ducklings but couldn’! say which they were.
