This was revealed last Monday by Tory Defence Minister Douglas Harkness. Speaking at an election rally in Edson, Alberta, Harkness said that Canada is acquiring five military sys- tems capable of carrying nu- clear warheads. He did not elaborate what the five systems are. It was obvious from this announce- ment, that the Tories have secretly negotiated with the U.S. for additional nuclear weapons systems unknown to most Canadians. The disclosure by MHark- ness bears out the warning of national Communist Party chairman Tim Buck recently, that if either the Tories or Liberals are re-elected they will introduce nuclear wea- pons in Canada. —Fiotos by Searle Friedman ANE ~~SLECTION EVE APPEAL THE ISSUE IS SURVIVAL! * LESLIE MORRIS ational Leader ©°mmunist Party tj. is Of @ * important on the eve Ww a day to sum up a The strongest, most signifi- cant vote a Canadian can cast next Monday is for the Communist candidates in the 12 ridings where they are nominated. A more im- portant question, he said, was whether Canada should re- main in NATO. The inference in his speech was that if Canada remains in NATO it will have to acquire nuclear weapons un- der its “obligations” to the military alliance: 7 The Communist Party has pointed out in the course of the federal election campaign that the weakness of the NDP position on nuclear arms was that it continued to support NATO from which, as Hark- ness indicated, the pressure on Canada to take nuclear That was why the Communist. Party - combined its call against nu- clear weapons with the pro- posal for withdrawal from NATO. Meanwhile, as the election campaign was drawing to an end, the U.S. announced that it will go ahead with its giant nuclear blast in space this week. Ignoring world-wide pro- tests against the plan to blast a huge hole in the atmos- phere, and warnings from scientists of the possible dan- gers involved, the U.S. is ex- pected to explode a bomb 50 to 500 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. The huge blast is expected to knock out radio communi- cations for up to 36 hours. The U.S. defence department last Saturday extended the danger area to 1,050 miles which will cover the entire Hawaiian Island chain. Last week U.N. acting sec- retary U Thant strongly con- demned the U.S, plan to ex- plode a nuclear bomb in space. Despite pretensions at be- ing against nuclear tests neither Tory, Liberal or Soc- ial Credit parties have con- demned the dangerous U.S. tests. :
