Harry Binder elected to _Montrea pledges MONTREAL Despite police raids on his elec- |, tion headquarters and intimidatory _ arrests among his canvassers, Harry Binder, popular Labor-Pro- gressive party leader in this city was elected as “B” councillor re- presenting Montreal's District 5 in the December 11 civic eléctions, thus ensuring that at least one council member will take a stand for continued rent controls. Binder polled 1,609 votes to place third in a field of eight candidates, _ John Swiztman, campaign mana- ger for Binder, said victory had - been made possible by “the thou- sands of people who are deter- mined that rent controls must not be abolished, and who realized that Binder was the best man to cham- pion their cause.” In his final pre-election appeal to voters, Harry Binder said: _ “Montreal has the largest popula- tion of any city in Canada.
