cost-cutting measure. Since that time the washer has broken
down completely and will now cost about $2,500 to repair.
Even after repair the equipment still does not do an adequate

job.

This piece of equipment is considered essential for
keeping our garbage vehicies cleaned. It is particularly odbdus
for the mechanics or welder to have to crawl inside the body
of the packer without it having been thoroughly cleaned. We
have investigated the use of a commercial washing operation
and this might be satisfactory for a routine type of cleaning.
However, it would he virtually impossible to provide reliably
quick service in this way in the case of a breakdown of a vehicle.

: It is proposed that our existing equipment be replaced
with a combination high pressure water and steam cleaner at an
approximate cost of $6,500 plus tax. The advantage of having
a combination unit is that the steam can be used to clean the
very difficult jobs and also to allow very quick drying after
cleaning so that work on the units is not held up. The high
pressure washer would be used for other routine washing.

In order to not exceed the 1980 Budget, it is proposed
that the replacement of the sanding unit at an estimated cost of
$9,000 be deleted from the budget and that the steam cleaning
unit be substituted and the Committee recommends that this be

done.

Re: Street Sweeping Schedule

A question was raised in Council about the standard
of sweeping being provided under the 1980 Budget. For the
information of Council our present budget allows for all streets
to be swept at least once a month and the important streets and
the mwntown areas to be swept twice a month. This is approximately
half of the sweeping that we were doing two years ago but would
Still seem to be sufficient providing that the schedule is
followed faithfully.

As has been brought to our attention, there have been
some problems recently in that some areas have been missed
completely from the monthly schedule. This has been brought
to the attention of the appropriate people and our control is
being tightened up so that it should not happen again.
