But for Debbie Taylor, flying sparks mean something else entirely, Taylor has been a. welder for 20 years. It’s been a satisfying career, but she ad- mits there are still struggles with the job. “It’s a process of life long learning,’’ says Taylor. Since 1977, the year Taylor started welding, many changes have taken place in her field, _ We are now trying to at- tracl more women to the non-traditional jobs. And lately there is a feeling the acceptance may be starting to be there. It feels good when it comes from the top,” Taylor says in spite of this, women still face prob- lems on the job. “They just don’t take me at face value, the way they do the other guys. I once walked on to a job in 1981 and none of the guys would take me onto their team. That meant [ should just turn and walk away from that job.’’ But Debbie Taylor is not the type of woman to walk away from a challenge. She stuck the job out, and many more which came her way, even though she said she wasn’t always fully ac- cepted. "You hope for it, but it’s not there.’’ Her love of welding, the - SPEAKING OUT. Welding would be a good alternative for girls aged 13- 14 for example, who are just drifting. “The money’s good and there’s a challenge. But some might just tum and walk away,’’ said Taylor. She hasn’t walked away in 20 years, Welding has sparked other areas of Taylor’s life. She's gotten involved in teaching and now teaches the women’s trade programs at the college. What do family and . friends think about Debbie Taylor’s choice in careers? “‘My son thinks it’s pretty special all in all. I help him out on his math. He’s kind of surprised when I can help on that. And it’s taught my son to be strong. It’s taught him to do what he wants to do, and not what society wants. To stand up for what he believes in.’’ Sarah de Leeuw works for the Terrace Women’s Resource Centre and is a regular contributor — on worten’s issues.
