A14 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 15, 1994 Human rights meet June 22 IT APPEARS to be more dif- ficult for people living in smaller towns to take human rights. action than--for those living in larger centers, says the person hired by the provin- cial government to review its human rights legislation. Bill Black, who'll be in Ter- race June 22.as part of a provincial tour, said informa- tion and access are key to those living in smaller towns. “in Vancouver and Victoria, for instance, access doesn’t seem to be an. issue,’’ he added, “Some people living in smalier areas say they would prefer to have a local person to contact, even if they aren’t a specialist.. Others prefer to have a specialist even if it " means a long distance call to Vancouver,’’ Black continued. The kinds of human rights cases being reported across the province don’t vary according to the size of an area or town, he said. ; ; But one difference is that people living in small towns are worried about repercus-. sions after a complaint has been filed up until it is heard and a decision made, said Black. The review is examining how fair the system is now, how suspected. abuses are in- vestigated and the effective- ness of the current system. Black said he wants to hear from as many groups and indi- viduals as possible, His June 22 sessions here in- clude hearing from businesses and groups during the day and from the public at night. The night session runs from 7 to9 p.m. in Room 213 of the main administration and class- room building at Northwest Community College. ‘DENISE M°CANN Portable Specialist ——_— OSS » D-Day remembered THOSE TOO young to remember and those who served gathered June 6 at the cenotaph in front of city hall for a short service commemorating the SOth anniversary of the Nomandy landings.
