“Day in the Skeena Mall. IT’S TIME TO GET SQUARE! Contributed The Skeena Squares Square Dance Club stared their new season of dances and lessons Monday, Sept. 14. The club has 30 members and six new members taking lessons. Square dancing is a recrea- tional activity for everyone. It’s only prerequisite is the ability to follow the caHler’s instructions. It is generally danced to country. music and always is called in English. The caller plays a special role in square dancing, call- ing a sequence of impromptu commands in his lyrics which the dancers convert into au entertaining square dance. The Skeena Squares Club, one of many in B.C, has been. very active this past summer. The dancers have given’ exhibitions as River- boat Days, IC. Day at Heritage Park and at Clubs If anyone would like to join, beginners are accepted into the lessons until the end of September. The lessons are every Monday night from.7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Curpenters Hall on the corner of Sparks and Davis. The club members dance from 8:15 pam. to 10 p.m. every Monday night at the ‘Impro’ inspires immersion students Contributed by Canadian Parents for French A famous Roman wriler ouce said that students learn best when, as we should say today, they're having fun. . This educational’ principle has. outlasted all the pedagogic gim- micks that have come and gone over the years and is found in ap- erition in the classroonis: of all” good teachers, A poignant example of the mix- ture of fun and learning is the classroom of .Madame = Marie- Louise Lacoursé, who" teaches ‘Grade 6/7 in the French immer- sion program at Cassie Hall. Mme. Lacourse: has introduced her students to an activity called ‘Improvisation?’ or “Impra’? - a theatre arts game that not only gives them a lot of fun, but also challenges them and allows them ta be active learners. ‘Impro’? has all the excitement of a hockey game, and in many ways resembles onc. Students are placed in teams and are under the strict authorily of. a. referee. A topic is given to a team af-stu- denis, who then have 20. secands” to decide what their skit will con- sist of. In the shart time allotted for. preparation, the students be- come. creators, writers, directors and iictars simultaneously! 7" Al the sound of a whisile the skit begins, The students use all their ingenuity and: crealivity to develop .a three- to- five-minute - dramatic skit, all in French. The game. may proceed | in various ways according . lo. instructions given by the referee (in this case Mine. Lacourse). At the end a public vote is made on the performance — done. in Cassie Hall by cither parcits or students. from other prades in the French immersion program. ‘Impro”’ is not in any way a and § ec, ® git uel, A & %, ‘ CANASA 3 ro s > 2 % 5 3 a ; cy i] % RG cmd e ng eo LOCKPORT SECURITY “(WIRELESS ALARM SPECIALISTS”’ * 5-8 yra on Batteries (Supervised) * False Alarm FREE guarantee » 14 DAY FREE TRIAL OFFER ® Speaking systems 4623 Lakalse Ave. Terrace $799 state 635-2881 same place. It gives the stu- dents a chance to practise aud de- velop the very considerable knowledge they have gained in school. Sinee the teacher always chooses the topics, she is able to control what the students are to Jearn aud practice, Topics so far have been as diverse as ‘Landing ” on the moon? and A day on the beech.” While “Hnprovisation” is cs- sentially a team activity, it is one in which Icarning is deemed more important than triumphing over one’s peers, and therefore fits in well-wilh the assumptions of the new Year 2000 philosophy of ed- ucalion. It also completely salis- fics the requirements of the Fine Arts strand of the new curriculum ‘which conceives artistic develop- ment as being. more thin merely painting pictures. Marie-Louise Lacourse has taken a bold, innovative ‘step in bringing “Impro” from her na- live Québec, and has worked very hard to make the activity a sie- cess here in Terrace. Students joining her class this September cian look forward to participating in the activity. _ HIGH. ‘QUALITY A Fund Raiser For mae The Canadian me National DAY vy Institute SALE For The Blind GIGANTIC SELECTION —Traes: Fig, Palm, Cactus, Blossom, Magnolia, atc. —tush Hanging Basketa: Ivy, Fiora!, Spider, Fuschia, Farn --l.adge Planters: Long Brass Bcokshal! and Ladge Plantera & ivy Table Top: Beauliful Centropiaces in Floral Mix or Green —Supplles: Unpolted Flowam and Vinos, Brass/Copper Pols, Moss Wicker Baskats, ate. eal ONE WHERE: TERRACE INN WHEN: Tuesday, Sept. 29 10am - Spm | FACTORY-DIRECT SAVINGS "UCKLO*?
