_——— ff Ry Ken Lipinski ‘The fall session of rugby in the northwest got underway Sunday in Kitimat with.a game between the Terrace Northmen and Kitimat Eurocan. The Northmen got off to an early four point lead with a try from Ken Lipinski after a fine play by Archie De Marchi. The two point convert kick failed, as did later Terrace conversion altempts. Kitimat struck back when Ron Davis picked up a blocked kick in the Terrace end to score a try. Adrian Jones kicked the convert to make the score 6 to 4 for Kitimat. Kitimat attempted several ‘penalty kicks but the score remained unchanged al the half. Terrace began the scoring in the second half. Several strong runs were made by the forwards, finished up by Al Westbrook who bulled in for the try. The Northmen's next try came when Neil Fleischmann drove in for the try after a strong push from the pack. The Kitimat back line then made several good runs, resulting in a try from John Shaw. The convert was kicked just wide. With Terrace holding a slim 12-10 two point lead, it appeared Kitimat would go ahead when John Shaw broke away with only the Terrace fullback to beat. Bill Warcup came wp with a fine hard tackle, however, to stop the run. The final scoring play of the game occurred when John Magdanz, playing in his Horthmen over Eurocan 16-10 first game, scored a_ try, | capping a good run by the Terrace back line. The final - ‘score, Terrace 16, Kitimat ~ 10. ; Rugby action continues with two games in Terrace on Sept. 3. Terrace will play Kitimat at 1:00 p.m,, then goes on to meet Prince Rupert at 3:00 p.m. Kitimat and Prince Rupert play Monday September 4 at 2:00 pm. All. games will be played at Skeena Junior High School. Pentathletes win 7 medals ‘By Pat Kenney Anyone interested? 1 doubt that anyone has heard how -well our three Terrace Modern Pentathlon athletes did at the B.C. Summer Games, as there was no TV coverage of this particular event. Perhaps something was mentioned on the radio, but from talking with friends since returning from Penticton, | gather my news is first hand! Sixteen boys and six girls competed in the Modern Pentathlon. it’s interesting to note that all these athletes except the three from Terrace (now two), and the two from Fort St. John come from the lower mainland and Victoria, Mona Martin left Terrace this summer for Port Alberni. There is no resentative from Prince Rupert, Kitimat, the Bulkley Valley area, or Prince George (the latter fortunate enough to have a fencing club; fencing is part of the modern pentathlon.) It seems that there are Spring salmon down in Bishop Bay, and a few scattered Springs at Amy or Moody Point. Over the weekend, McKay Reach was good for Coha. Mathews dogs Yanks KINGSTON, Ont. (CP) — A young Canadian sailor is holding his own against two of the top Americans in his class at the Canadian Olympic Regatta, Kingston (CORK) this week. Tam Matthews, a 22-year- old student who will be taking his Masters degree at University of Ottawa this year, was in second place in the 470 standings after three days of racing Tuesday. The Toronto sailor was sandwiched in the standings between first-place Steve Besjamin of Miami and Skip Whyte of Cambridge, Mass., . two of the best American 470 sailors. . Matthews is hoping for lighter winds the rest of the week, saying that might'give “him‘air elige on the ledder,. who has won four straight races, “There looks like lighter winds towards the end of the week,’’. Matthews said. “Hopefully, it'll put Ben- jamin back in the fleet.” He said his American rival's speed in the key, rather than tactical salling. “Benjamin just blows right off the start,” Mat- thews said. “When you get that far ahead, you don't have to worry about tac- ties.” : Raines returns to Rough Riders The CANADIAN Alter a second un successful attempt to make the National Football League, defensive tackle Mike Raines has signed a three-year contract with Ot- tawa Rough Riders in time to suit up tonight against Calgary Stampeders in an interlocking Canadian Football League game. In a second contest, Ed- monton Eskimos, first in the West, play second place British Columbia Lions in the first game at the Ed- moaton club's few home, Commonwealth Stadium. While disappointed at being cut by Chicago Bears, Raines, 25, figures he's a better football player after sticking to the final cuts in the gruelling Chicago . training camp. Raines, who came to Ot- tawa from Montreal Alouettes, said he's glad to be back with Riders. “J think this club can go to the Grey Cup and that makes it a lot better.” While many experts thought Riders would have to scramble to make the Eastern Conference playoffs because of a weak defence, the standings nearing the half-way point in the regular schedule tell a different story. LEADS THE EAST Ottawa leads the East with five wins in six starts. Their only logs came in the final minutes of a game with Toronto Argonauts. The Rider defence also has given up fewer points—just 85 than any club in the league. Head coach George “ Brancato has net yet named | his starting quarterback but if he continues with the successful rotating system, Condredge Holloway should be given the nod over Tam Clements. To accommodate Raines, Brancato had to drop defensive lineman Cornelius Walker who has been with the club since the season began. Meanwhile, Calgary coach and general manager Jack Gotta has the rejuvenated Stampeders in third place in the West, three points off the pace with a 3-2-1 record heading into tonight's game. The Stamps chartered an aircraft for the trip to Ot- tawa on Tuesday, due to the Air Canada strike. Calgary has been helped this year by a lack of injuries and by developing a solid corps of Canadian talent. However, Calgary will be without star running back Willie Burden, out with a bruised ankle and shin. Quarterback John Huf- nagel is another reason why the Stampeders are off to a winning start, Hufaagel has already thrown eight touch- down strikes compared to his full-season total of nine last year. He has had three in- terceptions compared with 13 last seasott. ROOKIES ADD DEPTH Gotta is also pleased with the development of his Canadian talent,, saying the rookies have “given us a lot of extra depth and have made a definite difference on specialty teams.” The nationally televised game on CTV begins at 8 p.m. EDT. Edmonton will start the same line-up against the Lions that has brought them a $1 record this year. They ended their appearances at Clarke Stadium last week by defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Esks were the West's representative in last year’s Grey Cup game and already are strong contenders to repeal. : B.C, is on the limp but wide receiver Leon Bright ap- pears to be the only one of the wounded who might miss the game, to be televised in ihe West by CBC. Other Lions who are hurting are running back Larry Key (hamstring), tight end Richard Appleby (sprained ankle), defensive tackle Frank Landry (shoulder), receiver Jim Young (groin) and defensive . back Hal Lind (ankle). The Lions take a 3-2-2 record into the important contest following a 30-26 loss to Montreal in the team's , last outing. 78 $148.00 per month lease end price $2,175.00 or simply return Je Camara $199.00 per month lease end price $1,975.00 or sim $1,025.00 7a Fiesta 3 ar. 7m $99.00 par morth fease end price $1400.00 or simply return $2,275.00 FOR PRIVATE USE OR BUSINES: AUTOVEST | | Before you buy, investigate the advantages of this rent- to-own plan. I live on afarm near... Over twenty horses from Terrace came home on Monday from the Bulkley Valley Fall Fair Horse Show . on the weekend. A good effort was made by the show committee in Smithers and despite being rather new at the job, the crew kept most of the con- testants happy. The only uricooperative one was the weatherman and the heavy rain the day before the show made freshly turned earth rather difficult to ride through. The bad footing cacsed a few spills in the jumping classes but there were no serious injuries. Terrace riders proved to be pretty competitive and the results were pleasing. ~ HALTER CLASSES Other Registered Breeds - 2) Prince Erin, R. Morrison, 3) The Inn Horse, N. Otherwise, why is it next to impossible to pick up the silver dollars, shoot the targel, catch the fish, or in, any way make a profit out of these ‘games of skill"? Granted, now and then we see a lucky winner, but mostly we see disappointed victims muttering, ‘never again” = One fine day, in my younger years, I attended a Fali Fair, intending to spend . little and observe much. My attitude must have annoyed some of the carnival barkers or ‘shills', because several asked my why I didn’t try my luck at one game or another. After some urging, I made asmart remark and stepped up to a booth where mouey was being given away to anyone lucky enough to hit it where it hung on a long wire.
