The recommendations called for: © Plant and camp accident prevention committees to do everything possible to have an IWA member of the commit- tee accompany the WCB in- spector on his tour of the plant or camp. © The Local Union to con- tinue the one cent per capita to the ICFTU for another year. © The Local to go on record as continuing to endorse the policies of the CLC, the B.C. Federation of Labour, and the Regional Council, in the field of political action. President Murray Drew was re-elected Regional exec- utive board member and Bar- ney Doherty was re-elected safety director in the elections held for these two posts. The extensive Officers’ Re- port paid tribute to Tom Ains- ley, an officer and long-time member of the Local, who passed away recently. The re- port stated in part: “The late Brother Ainsley was well-known in all labour circles and we shall long re- member the unselfish contri- butions he made to the Local Union.” The report paid special at- tention to the problem the officers were having in pro- cessing WCB claims because injured members were either late in reporting their injury or improperly filling out the forms. The Report stated: “During the past year, the Local officers helped process many Workmen’s Compensa- tion claims. We have been successful in getting a num- ber of members compensation benefits, however, in other in- stances we were unsuccessful, even though we explored all avenues permitted under the Act. “The present system of ad- ministering WCB claims leaves a lot to be desired. If there is any doubt that the workman has not followed the rules set down by the claims department of the Board (i.e. reporting within a given time, filling in Form 6 correctly, in- dicating there was an acci- dent) , the Claims Department usually disallows the claim. _ “By hearings before the travelling board or by taking the workmen to hearings in Vancouver before the Com- missioners, we have overcome some of these obstacles, how- ever, the time that elapses be- tween the time the workman is injured and benefits are es- tablished works an unneces- sary hardship.” Alberni District Credit Union TERM SAVING CERTIFICATES increase in value by 200% if held to maturity Purchase by Payroll Deduction ; 124 - 4th Ave., South _ Port Alberni, B.C. The Local has allocated last year’s $300.00 scholarship to a member of the Local Union who is a successful applicant and attends the Labour Col- lege of Canada. The Local will also pay the registration fee of $5.00 to members who apply to attend the Labour College provided there are 10 successful appli- cants in the Victoria area who attend the pre-college lectures at Victoria University. Anaccident- prevention seminar will be held by the Local January 28, for all mem- bers of accident prevention committees and a shop stew- ards’ seminar will be held on February 4. The Report also dealt with finances noting that the Local now had a healthy financial surplus over last year. This was attributed to the dues in- crease approved by the mem- bership last May. The Report concluded by praising the work of the vari- ous committees in the Local: ; For Christmas; " THE SAME HEARTY OLD TOAST ... “All of the plants in the Lo- cal, where there are 25 or more employees, have good active committees doing a re- markable job in policing the provisions of the contract. During the past year, the plant committees have had to deal with automation and speedup which is occurring in all sec- tions of the industry and which creates the problems of seniority application, job double-up and lay-off. We commend the committees for a job well done.” RIS Re Res Bes Nes hee “Absent Friends” . --- and All Good Wishes for the Holiday Season to All Ni . - |.W.A.
