Hansen, Victoria, writes: The reactionary church of Rome has in all ages opposed intellectual appeal, and has made alliances with forces which would trample on all the ideals of peace and freedom. Fascism has been their ideal. Their fear of another Cuba in South America had Paul Martin attempting to force Canada to join the OAS which was an instrument of oppression of the U.S. government against the rising tide of discontent. Franco Mussolini and Hitler, along with Togo, — men of the vilest character and colossal greed — who dreamed of plunder and wealth while promising deliverance from those terrible “‘reds’’, I have seen Nazi and Fascist elements in Canada who are nothing more than provocateurs — minutemen — attempting to foster the blame for all troubles on Anti-war, Anti-fascist ele ments. Living on Hamilton Street in Vancouver, I met these agents of fascism. One, a former Rommel army officer, was brought into Canada to teach the Canadian fascist party how to organize. These people play on frustrated people, drunks, and some of the worst people to bomb this and blast that, accomplishing the task of bringing out the ‘‘black shirts’ to crack the heads of union people and those who struggle to make Canada a better place in which to live. 4) Don't Miss the Affair of the Season! He claimed that ‘‘fish caught in Canadian coastal waters have been given a clean bill of health in the inspection program to test mercury content.’ Stevens said the inspection program must be inadequate, otherwise the discovery of high levels of mercury would have been detected sooner. The dogfish in question were caught in Swanson Channel right in the middle of the Gulf Islands. Most of them are large, mature female fish. “One of the problems may be that all or most of the samples are taken only from commercial catches. This means that in a species such as dogfish, which is only fished occasionally for com- mercial purposes, Mercury may be undetected for a long time. Dogfish schools are known to travel long distances. They are predators and must have picked up mercury from the fish they prey upon.”’ Stevens said the fisheries department must conduct an intensive survey of all species of fish and marine plants to trace the mercury contamination to its source. In April, 1970 the Minister. closed upper Howe Sound to all sport and com- mercial fishing due to the dumping of mercury by the FMC Chemical plant at Squamish. ‘“‘However, he did not im-, mediately put a complete stop to the actual discharge of mercury . into salt water. The company took some steps to reduce the loss of mercury but new equipment was not to be installed until January 1, 1971. “Tt is possible this pollution is responsible for the present contamination. On the other hand, there may be other sources of mercury pollution in either Canadian or American waters. ‘All potential sources must be thoroughly checked and a total prohibition must be applied,”’ Stevens demanded. ‘‘Otherwise the danger of more drastic effects on our fisheries resources will continue to grow. It is not good enough for the Minister to give blanket assurances nor to paint rose pictures. The ugly truth is coming out. Decisive action must follow if human life and our marine resources are to be protected.”’ HOMER STEVENS, president, charged present pollution inspection program was “inadequate.”” Ottawa must act on issues Vital to women The cost of bringing out the report of the Commission on the Status of Women has been given wide publicity — three million dollars and three years to complete. No other portion of the report has received such publicity. In fact, women everywhere charge the document has. been pigeonholed and will remain so unless something is done to bring it before the House of Commons. Grace McInnis, the only woman M.P., urged many times during the Christmas recess which she spent in Vancouver, that women, and men, demand the report be discussed and implemented. The Vancouver Sun’s Penny Wise has taken up the call. In a recent issue she wrote: “... tjat $3,000,000 report on th status of women lies, ignored and neglected, in the bulging ‘files of our absentee Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau’. “Our job’’, she said, “‘is to get ‘thousands of letters to the Prime Minister of Canada. No stamp needed...” There are 167 recom- mendations in the rpoert, she reminds us. It is not a female thing, but a human rights thing. The report published hundreds of examples of discrimination against the female sex, and made several outstanding recom- mendations to bring some sort of equality. Among them are: Maternity leave with pay for all women in the labor force; a guaranteed annual income for all one-parent families with dependent children; the govern- ment institute a program of day- care centres, the cost of care based on a family’s income; job opportunities and advancement for women be exactly the same as those for men — with more women in executive board rooms, in professions and in government; free abortion on demand for all women wishing to UFAWU .- Telford Taylor, chief United States prosecutor at the Nuremberg war trials, charged that Gen. Wm. C. Westmoreland, (above) army chief of staff, might be convicted as a war criminal if war crimes standards established from’ the experience of the Second World War were applied’ to Westmoreland’s conduct of the war in Vietnam. Taylor said‘civilian deaths caused by bombing and shelling of Vietnamese hamlets in free-fire zones, forced evacuation of peasants from their hamlets and a failure to adequately care for civilian casualties were ‘‘war crimes” which could be charged against Westmoreland.
